Spin thread with a drop spindle
Twirl a weighted stick so it twists wool or plant fiber into long, even thread while you walk or talk.
Twist is what turns loose fluff into thread. Twist a bundle of short fibers and they grip each other; grip enough of them in a long line and you have thread you cannot snap with your hands. A drop spindle is the simplest machine ever built for this: a stick with a weight on it. You spin it like a top, it hangs in the air, and its steady turning feeds twist up into the fiber you let out between your fingers.
For most of human history, all thread — every sail, every shirt, every fishing net — was spun this way, mostly by people doing something else at the same time. Your first thread will be lumpy. By the end of a week it will be even. That is normal and true for everyone who has ever learned.
You need
- A straight stick, about 25–30 cm long and roughly as thick as a pencil, smooth so fiber doesn't snag. Carve a small notch or a shallow hook shape at the top end.
- A weight (the whorl) — a disc of wood, a rounded flat stone, or hard clay, about 5–8 cm across and 30–60 grams, with a hole through the middle. Push it onto the stick near the bottom, snug. Heavier spins longer and suits thick thread; lighter suits fine thread.
- Prepared fiber — combed plant fiber or fluffy carded wool. It must be open and airy, not matted.
- A short starter string, about arm's length, tied to the stick just above the whorl. Any string will do.
Steps
- Tie the starter string to the shaft above the whorl, spiral it up the stick, and catch it in the top notch so about 20 cm hangs free above the spindle.
- Join fiber to the string: fluff out the string's end, overlap it with a thin wisp of your fiber, and twist them together between your fingers until they hold.
- Learn "park and spin" first — the slow, safe way:
- Hold the fiber bundle loosely in one hand.
- With the other hand, roll the spindle shaft hard against your thigh or twirl it clockwise, then hold the spindle still between your knees ("park" it).
- The thread above it is now full of stored twist. Pinch the thread just below the fiber bundle with your spinning hand.
- With the fiber hand, gently pull the bundle back 2–3 cm so a thin ribbon of fibers slides out (this pulling-out is called drafting).
- Slide your pinch upward and let the stored twist run into the drafted fibers. Watch them tighten into thread.
- Repeat: twirl, park, pinch, draft, release. Over and over.
- When the thread grows to arm's length, unhook it from the notch, wind it around the shaft just above the whorl in a neat cone, re-hook, and continue.
- After a day or two, stop parking: twirl the spindle and let it hang and spin in the air while you draft continuously. Now you are truly drop-spinning, and it gets fast.
- Keep your thickness even by controlling one thing only: how many fibers you let into the drafting zone. Thin spots need more fiber, thick spots need more pull.
- To finish a full spindle, wind the thread off into a ball or around a stick. For strong cord, spin a second thread the same way, then twist the two together the opposite way (counter-clockwise) — this two-strand thread is called plied, and it does not untwist itself.
Watch out
- The spindle drops and the thread snaps. Everyone's does. Just overlap fresh fiber onto the broken end and twist them together — joins are invisible in finished cloth.
- Too much twist makes wiry thread that kinks back on itself. Draft faster, or twirl less.
- Too little twist makes soft thread that drifts apart when pulled. Twirl more before drafting.
- Pinching the fiber bundle tight in your fist blocks drafting completely — the fibers can't slide. Hold the bundle like a resting bird: enclosed, never squeezed.
- Letting twist run into the whole fiber bundle locks it solid. Always keep a pinch between the twist and the bundle.
- Don't judge yourself by hour one. The hands learn this below the level of words. Ten minutes, many times a day, beats one long frustrated session.
How it works
A single fiber is short and weak. Twist presses fibers against each other along their whole length, so pulling the thread makes the fibers grip harder — the harder you pull, the tighter they hold. The whorl is a flywheel: its weight keeps the spindle turning steadily, storing your flick of the wrist as smooth, continuous twist.
