Find your way
Use the sun by day and the stars by night so you can leave camp and always get back.
You can go a night without fire and days without food, but you cannot afford to lose your camp. Without a reference point, people really do walk in circles, drifting to one side without feeling it. The fix costs nothing: the sun and stars move in a fixed pattern, and one day of practice makes them your compass.
You need
- The sun, on a day clear enough to cast a shadow.
- A straight stick about as long as your arm, and two small stones — for the shadow trick below.
- Things to mark a trail with — stacked stones, snapped twigs, scratches on bark.
- Your own steps, for measuring distance.
- At night, a patch of clear starry sky.
Steps
- Before you leave camp, turn around and study it from the direction you will come back. Camp looks completely different from the far side. Fix one unmistakable feature in your mind — a forked tree, a pale rock.
- Make a shadow-stick compass:
- Push the stick upright into flat, open ground.
- Put a stone exactly at the tip of its shadow.
- Wait 15–30 minutes, then put the second stone at the shadow tip's new spot.
- The line between the stones runs west to east — the first stone is the west end. Stand with the first stone at your left foot and the second at your right: you are facing north. This works in both hemispheres.
- Use the sun for rough directions in between: it rises roughly east and sets roughly west everywhere. "Roughly" can be off by a lot in midsummer and midwinter; when the answer matters, use the stick.
- Aim for lines, not points. Walk toward something long you cannot miss — a stream, a ridge, a shoreline. A feature like this is called a handrail: even if you drift, you will still hit it, then follow it home.
- Mark your trail as you go. At every place you could choose wrongly on the way back — a fork, a slope change — leave a mark: three stacked stones, or a snapped branch pointing home. Place marks so they are visible from the return direction, not just the way you came.
- Count your distance in double-steps: count one every time your left foot lands. Most adults take about 60–70 double-steps per 100 metres. Knowing "camp is about 600 double-steps back along this line" turns panic into a plan.
- At night in the northern half of the world, find north by the North Star:
- Find the Big Dipper — seven bright stars shaped like a pot with a long handle.
- Take the two stars forming the pot's front edge and follow their line outward about five times that gap.
- You land on a lone, medium-bright star: the North Star. The point on the horizon straight below it is due north, all night, every night.
- In the southern half of the world, find the Southern Cross — a compact kite of four bright stars, with two very bright "pointer" stars beside it. Extend the kite's long axis about four and a half times its own length, then drop straight down to the horizon: that is south.
- In fog or thick cloud, do not navigate. Stay put, or backtrack mark to mark. Walking blind is how circles happen.
Watch out
- Moss does not reliably grow on the north side of trees. Shade and moisture decide where it grows. Never use it.
- Never just "walk that way." Pick a far landmark on your line, walk to it, then pick the next one from there.
- The sun moves about 15 degrees across the sky every hour. A direction you memorised at breakfast is wrong by afternoon — re-check with the stick.
- Following a river downstream often leads to people, but it can also lead into gorges and swamps. Use it as a handrail, not a rule to obey blindly.
- The North Star is not the brightest star in the sky. Trust the Dipper's pointer line, not brightness, or you may follow a planet.
- If you realise you are lost: stop. Sit down, drink water, think. Every panicked step erases your last known position. Stay near open ground where you can be seen.
How it works
The Earth spins once a day, so the whole sky — sun and stars alike — sweeps steadily from east to west. The shadow-stick works because the shadow tip travels the opposite way, west to east, as the sun crosses over. The North Star is special because it sits almost exactly above the Earth's spin axis, so it alone appears to stand still while everything else wheels around it.
