Twist plants into string and rope

Roll and twist bark, nettle, or grass fibers into cord strong enough to trust your work to.

String holds the world together. Without cord you cannot tie a shelter frame, hang food out of reach, string a bow, set a fishing line, or sew anything. And string is hiding in plants everywhere: long, tough fibers that only need to be freed and twisted together. One twisted cord is many times stronger than its loose fibers, the same way a braid of hair is stronger than single hairs.

The method below — the reverse wrap — is the one trick to learn. It takes ten minutes to understand and an hour of rolling to get smooth. After that, you can make cord anywhere on Earth.

Steps

  1. Gather fiber. Strip inner bark into ribbons, or crush nettle stalks flat with a stick, snap them, and peel the fiber skin away from the woody core. Longer fibers make stronger cord — aim for pieces at least as long as your forearm.
  2. Clean and soften. Pull off woody bits. Rub and roll the fibers between your palms until they feel like rough hair, not like straw. Dampen stiff fiber; let soaked fiber dry to just-damp.
  3. Make a bundle and find its middle — off-center. Take a pencil-thick bundle of fibers. Grip it about one-third of the way along, not at the exact middle, so the two ends run out at different points later (this matters in step 6).
  4. Kink it. Twist the bundle at that grip point until it kinks and folds back on itself, making a small loop. Now you hold two strands, a longer one and a shorter one, joined at the loop.
  5. Do the reverse wrap. This is the whole secret:
    • Twist the strand farther from you AWAY from you (roll it between finger and thumb, or along your thigh).
    • Then wrap that tightened strand over the other one, TOWARD you.
    • The strands swap places. Repeat: twist the far one away, wrap it toward you. Away, over, away, over.
    • The two twists fight each other, and that fight locks the cord so it cannot unravel.
  6. Splice in new fiber before you run out. When either strand thins to about half its thickness — with a few finger-widths still left — lay a new bundle of fiber alongside it, overlapping by a hand-length, and keep twisting the two as one. Because your strands end at different points (step 3), the joins never land in the same spot.
  7. Finish the end. Tie a simple overhand knot in the last bit, or wrap and tuck the tails back under the twist.
  8. Test it, then make it thicker if needed. Pull hard between both hands. It should hold your full pull. For rope, take two or three finished cords and reverse-wrap THEM together the same way.

How it works

A single plant fiber is strong along its length but short. Twisting presses many short fibers against each other so friction carries the pull from fiber to fiber, making a strand as long as you like. The reverse wrap then twists two strands in one direction while wrapping them around each other in the other; each strand's urge to untwist tightens the wrap instead of undoing it. The cord is held shut by its own tension.
