Hammer hot iron
With an anvil stone, tongs, and a hammer, glowing iron moves like stiff clay under your blows.
Cold iron is stubborn. Hot iron — glowing orange to yellow — moves under a hammer like stiff clay. Learning to read the glow, hold a rhythm, and put each blow where you mean it is smithing. It takes a season of practice, and every hour pays off for the rest of your life.
The colour of the metal is your thermometer. Learn it in dim light or shade — sunshine hides the glow and fools you.
You need
- A forge fire: a shallow clay-lined trough or pit with an air pipe entering from the side, fed by your bellows. Much smaller than the smelting furnace — a fist-deep mound of burning charcoal is enough.
- Charcoal, walnut-size lumps. A day of forging eats a sack of it.
- An anvil: any big, hard stone with a smooth flat top, set at knuckle height when you stand beside it. Later, a solid iron block is better.
- A hammer, about 1–1.5 kg, with a smooth slightly-rounded face. Heavier tires you; lighter does nothing.
- Tongs: at first, long iron bars with the far end left cold, or split green sticks. Forge real tongs as one of your first projects — they change everything.
- A water bucket beside the anvil, for cooling tool handles and small fires — not for the workpiece yet.
- Wool or cotton clothes and boots. Synthetic cloth melts onto skin.
Steps
- Build the fire. Light charcoal over the air pipe's mouth and mound more on top. Pump gently until the heart of the mound glows.
- Bury the iron in the glowing coals just past the air blast — beside the hottest spot, not in the direct air stream, which burns metal away.
- Pump steadily and wait. Colours climb: dull red (too cold to work well), cherry red, orange, then bright yellow — the sweet spot, about 1,100 °C. White with fizzing sparks means the iron itself is burning: too far.
- Work fast. Carry the piece to the anvil. You have roughly 10–20 seconds of good heat. Know your next three blows before you pull it from the fire.
- Aim every blow. Metal squashes away from where the hammer lands.
- Flat, square blows flatten and spread.
- Blows near the anvil's edge, walking the piece along, stretch it longer and thinner — this is called drawing out.
- Standing a short piece on end and hammering down makes it shorter and fatter — upsetting.
- Bends happen over the anvil's edge with light taps.
- Back to the fire the moment the glow drops to dull red. Reheat, repeat. A simple piece takes many heats — that is normal, not failure.
- Practise this drill all season: take a rough bar from your bloom, draw it into a neat square rod, then knock the corners into an octagon, then round, then taper it to a point. When you can do that smoothly, you are a smith.
Watch out
- Everything near the forge is hot until proven cold. Iron below about 500 °C glows not at all but still chars flesh instantly. Hover the back of your hand near a piece before ever touching it.
- Hammering too cold cracks iron. If it stops moving easily and rings harder, reheat. Never force black metal.
- Burning the work. White sparks mean that end is ruined — crumbly like a sparkler. Cut the burnt part off and carry on.
- Flying scale. The grey flaky crust that pops off hot iron flies at your eyes. Wear eye protection if you have any glass or mesh; if not, keep your face out of line with the blows.
- Ringing ears. Steady hammering damages hearing over months. Plug your ears with wool or wax.
- Fire spreads. Charcoal sparks travel. Bare earth or stone underfoot, water bucket full, and drown the fire completely when you finish.
How it works
Iron is a crowd of tiny crystal grains. Cold, they lock against each other, so the metal cracks before it bends far. Heat loosens their grip and lets grains slide and reform, so the metal flows under pressure and heals behind the blow. Every hammer stroke also squeezes the metal denser and cleaner — bloom iron improves the more honestly it is worked.
