Hammer hot iron

With an anvil stone, tongs, and a hammer, glowing iron moves like stiff clay under your blows.

First, you need: Smelt iron in a bloomery

Cold iron is stubborn. Hot iron — glowing orange to yellow — moves under a hammer like stiff clay. Learning to read the glow, hold a rhythm, and put each blow where you mean it is smithing. It takes a season of practice, and every hour pays off for the rest of your life.

The colour of the metal is your thermometer. Learn it in dim light or shade — sunshine hides the glow and fools you.

You need

Steps

  1. Build the fire. Light charcoal over the air pipe's mouth and mound more on top. Pump gently until the heart of the mound glows.
  2. Bury the iron in the glowing coals just past the air blast — beside the hottest spot, not in the direct air stream, which burns metal away.
  3. Pump steadily and wait. Colours climb: dull red (too cold to work well), cherry red, orange, then bright yellow — the sweet spot, about 1,100 °C. White with fizzing sparks means the iron itself is burning: too far.
  4. Work fast. Carry the piece to the anvil. You have roughly 10–20 seconds of good heat. Know your next three blows before you pull it from the fire.
  5. Aim every blow. Metal squashes away from where the hammer lands.
    • Flat, square blows flatten and spread.
    • Blows near the anvil's edge, walking the piece along, stretch it longer and thinner — this is called drawing out.
    • Standing a short piece on end and hammering down makes it shorter and fatter — upsetting.
    • Bends happen over the anvil's edge with light taps.
  6. Back to the fire the moment the glow drops to dull red. Reheat, repeat. A simple piece takes many heats — that is normal, not failure.
  7. Practise this drill all season: take a rough bar from your bloom, draw it into a neat square rod, then knock the corners into an octagon, then round, then taper it to a point. When you can do that smoothly, you are a smith.

How it works

Iron is a crowd of tiny crystal grains. Cold, they lock against each other, so the metal cracks before it bends far. Heat loosens their grip and lets grains slide and reform, so the metal flows under pressure and heals behind the blow. Every hammer stroke also squeezes the metal denser and cleaner — bloom iron improves the more honestly it is worked.
