Burn and carve a dugout canoe

Hollow a single log with careful fire and a scraper until it floats light and true.

A raft carries you across water. A canoe carries you along it β€” upstream, downstream, mile after mile, with a load, and stays dry doing it. The dugout is the oldest boat we know of: a single log, hollowed out until it is a shell that floats high and slips through water instead of shoving it aside. People made these ten thousand years ago with fire and stone, and you can too.

The secret is that fire does the digging. You don't carve a log hollow β€” that would take a month of blisters. You burn a little, scrape away the char (the soft blackened wood), and burn again. Fire eats in hours what a scraper eats in days. Your whole job is keeping the fire small and exactly where you want it.

Steps

  1. Choose and fell the log, or better, use one already down but sound (knock it β€” solid wood rings, rotten wood thuds). Roll it on two smaller logs to a flat work spot near water but above any flood line.
  2. Shape the outside first. With the axe, flatten the top face β€” this will be the open side. Round and taper both ends into blunt points, the front slightly finer. Take off all bark; bark hides rot and holds water.
  3. Mark the hollow. Score a line around the top face, leaving a rim of 8 to 10 centimetres of solid wood all around. Everything inside the line will be burned out.
  4. Paint the fire brakes. Smear wet clay thickly over the rim, the ends, and the outside walls β€” everywhere fire must NOT go. Re-wet the clay whenever it dries pale.
  5. Lay embers in the middle of the marked area β€” a line of coals, not a bonfire. Feed with small sticks. Small flames, low heat, all day: that is the pace. Fan gently with a mat or board to steer the burn.
  6. Burn, then scrape, then burn. Every hour or two, rake the coals aside and scrape out all the char down to brown wood. Char is an insulator β€” the fire stalls unless you remove it. Then put coals back and go again.
  7. Check thickness constantly. Use your gauge stick against the outside. Where the wall nears 5 centimetres, kill the fire there with clay and water and move the coals elsewhere. Burn the middle deep, keep the ends and rim fat.
  8. Finish by hand. When the hollow is roughly right, put the fire out for good and shave the inside smooth with the adze and scrapers. Smooth walls shed water and show cracks early.
  9. Test float in the shallows. It should sit level, riding high. If it rolls to one side, shave wood off the heavy side's inside wall. If it sits low at one end, thin that end.
  10. Test loaded, near shore, with a swimmer's caution β€” kneel low, stay within easy reach of land for the first days. Keep the finished canoe shaded and out of the sun, or the wood checks (cracks as it dries).

How it works

Wood floats because it is full of air-filled cells, but a solid log barely floats you. Hollowing removes most of the weight while keeping the shape, so the boat pushes aside far more water than it weighs β€” and the water pushes back up with that difference. That upward push is buoyancy, and the hollow is where your cargo rides on it.
