Find and clean clay

Dig sticky earth from stream banks, test it with a squeeze and a roll, and knead out the stones and air.

First, you need: Find water

Clay is earth so fine that water makes it sticky and bendable, like dough. Shape it wet, bake it in fire, and it turns hard as stone. That one trick gives you pots, bricks, ovens, and later the kilns that make metal possible. Everything in this domain starts with a bucket of good clay.

The good news: clay is common, for a reason. It is not a special kind of dirt β€” it is ordinary rock that water and weather have slowly rotted into something new, fine as flour, then carried off by streams. Fine dust only falls where water slows and rests β€” a stream bend, a pond bottom, an old flood plain β€” so there it settles into sticky layers. You are not hunting something rare; you are reading the land for places where water has long been slow. And your fingers tell clay from its lookalikes better than your eyes: sand and silt are gritty or floury, clay alone is sticky, and skin feels that difference. This guide teaches your hands the tests.

Steps

  1. Look where water slows down. The best spots:
    • The inside bend of a stream, where the current is lazy and the bank smooth and slick β€” the fast outside drops only gravel, so dig the quiet side.
    • The bottom and edges of ponds, ditches, and puddles that hold water long after rain. Clay is what stops the water draining away β€” so a puddle that lasts is pointing straight down at the clay beneath it.
    • Cut banks, road cuts, and animal burrows, where the earth's layers lie exposed like a cut cake.
    • Where plants hint at wet feet β€” rushes, willows, sedges like ground that clay keeps damp.
  2. Dig past the topsoil. The dark, crumbly top layer β€” a forearm deep, 30 cm or so β€” is roots and rot, not clay. Below it, look for a layer that is smooth, dense, and a different colour: grey, red, brown, yellow, even blue-grey. Good clay cuts cleanly, shiny like cheese; sand pours off your shovel, clay clings in a slab.
  3. Do the feel test. Wet a pinch and rub it between finger and thumb.
    • Gritty, like tiny stones β€” sand. Too coarse.
    • Silky like flour, but not sticky β€” silt: rock dust finer than sand, coarser than clay. Close, but it will not hold a shape.
    • Sticky and greasy, clinging so you must scrape it off β€” clay. Keep going.
  4. Do the squeeze test. Squeeze a wet, egg-sized lump hard in your fist and open your hand. Good clay holds the print of every finger, sharp-edged. Sand falls apart; silt holds loosely but crumbles when poked.
  5. Do the roll test β€” the one that decides. Roll a wet lump between your palms into a pencil-thick snake, then bend it slowly around your finger.
    • Bends into a ring without cracking: good clay. Take it.
    • Bends but cracks on the outside of the curve: usable. Knead it well and work it a little wetter.
    • Breaks into short pieces: too much sand or silt. Dig deeper in the same hole β€” clay often sits under sandy layers β€” or try another spot.
    • A snake that stretches like warm toffee means very rich clay: lovely to shape, but it cracks drying. The fix is in "Watch out."
  6. Carry home more than you think you need. Half of raw clay is often stones, sand, and roots β€” a full carry may boil down to half.
  7. Clean it. Two ways β€” pick one:
    • Fast, by hand: work the wet clay in handfuls and pick out every stone, root, shell, and hard lump you can feel. One stone can crack a pot in the fire. Good enough for bricks, hearths, and rough pots.
    • Thorough, with water β€” settling the clay clean (potters call it levigation): dry the dug clay hard, crush it to powder (outside, dust wetted down β€” see "Watch out"), and stir it into a container of water until it is thin soup. Stir hard, then stop. Stones and sand sink at once β€” you can hear them tick on the bottom. After a slow count of thirty to sixty, pour the still-cloudy water off into your second container, leaving the grit behind. Now wait hours, or overnight: the cloudiness is the clay itself, and it settles into a smooth bed. Pour off the clear water above. What remains is clay finer than fingers could pick. Spread it on cloth or dry stone until it stiffens from cream to dough β€” done when it holds a dent without sticking.
  8. Knead it β€” potters say "wedge." Press the lump down and away with the heels of your hands, fold it back, quarter-turn, press again β€” like bread, but with one rule: always press, never fold air in. A steady rhythm, a good 10 minutes for a bucket's worth. Cut the lump in half now and then with a taut string, hunting air bubbles: holes in the cut faces mean keep going. Two clean cuts in a row, the lump one softness all through β€” done. Wedging also evens the wetness out.
  9. Store it wet β€” and let it rest if you can. Wrapped in wet leaves, cloth, or bark and kept in the shade, clay keeps for weeks. Better, it improves: clay rested wet for weeks β€” potters say "soured" β€” grows smoother and stretchier, and its faint sour smell is a good sign ("How it works" says why). Dried-out clay is never ruined: crush it, add water, begin again. Clay forgives everything until the fire.

Watch out

How it works

Start with what clay actually is. Mountains do not last. Rain, frost, and rivers grind rock down β€” to gravel, then sand, then silt. But grinding alone never makes clay: grind silt finer and you only get smaller grains of the same old rock β€” still stiff and dead in the hand, never sticky. Grinding changes a grain's size, never its nature. Clay is born from water's slower trick. Rainwater is faintly acid, and over ages it rots certain minerals in the rock β€” feldspar above all β€” and rebuilds their stuff as new crystals: flat ones, so small that ten thousand side by side would barely cross your fingernail. That finest flour does not stay put: water carries it, and only lets it fall where the water slows to a rest. Fast water keeps fine dust dancing; still water lets it sleep. That is the whole secret of finding clay β€” stream bends, pond bottoms, and flood plains are simply places where water has rested for centuries, laying its finest flour in beds.

Now the secret of clay's feel. Clay grains are not little balls, like sand. They are flat plates β€” tiny sheets, a deck of playing cards shrunk down past seeing. Wet clay is that deck with a film of water between every pair of cards, and the water acts like oil. Push the deck slowly and the cards slide over one another β€” then stop, and hold their new position. That slide-and-stay is what potters call plasticity, the whole magic of clay: it moves where your hands say and stays where your hands leave it. Sand cannot do this β€” next to clay plates, sand grains are boulders, and boulders do not stack and slide, they roll apart. Silt sits between: too fine to feel gritty, too round and coarse to slide-and-stay. That is what your fingers read in the feel test β€” gritty means boulders, silky means in-between, sticky-and-bendy means plates.

The water-cleaning trick works because falling through water is a race that size decides. Stir everything in and let go: big heavy grains punch straight down in seconds, silt takes minutes, and the flat little clay plates β€” light, and shaped like falling leaves β€” hang in the water for hours. So the recipe writes itself: wait a minute and the grit is down; pour off the cloud and you carry away almost pure clay; wait overnight and the cloud itself lies down as a smooth clean bed.

Wedging, in this picture, is quality control on the deck. Every air pocket is a gap holding nothing but a bubble β€” a steam bomb seed waiting for the fire. Wedging squeezes the gaps shut and shuffles wet cards among dry ones until the deck is evenly oiled.

And souring? Fresh-mixed clay still has plates the water never truly reached. Left wet for weeks, water finally creeps between every last pair of cards, and tiny living things grow a trace of friendly slime that greases the deck a little more. The clay is at last wet all the way through β€” that is why old clay shapes like a dream.

Fire finishes the story: heat drives the water out, then welds the plates to each other so they can never slide β€” or soak apart β€” again. The deck of cards becomes one stone. But that is the next guide's tale.
