Shape pots by pinch and coil

Pinch a ball of clay into a small bowl, then roll clay snakes and stack them into pots big enough to cook in.

First, you need: Find and clean clay

A pot is a hole you can carry. Once you can shape one, you can store water, keep grain from mice, and β€” after firing β€” boil food over a fire. No wheel, no tools you don't already have. People made pots by pinch and coil for thousands of years before anyone spun a potter's wheel, and the pots were good.

Clay lets you do almost anything, as long as you do it slowly. It has no grain like wood does β€” no built-in direction that fights back β€” but it punishes hurry: pulled fast it tears, dried fast it cracks. Every rule here is one lesson in different clothes: be even, be slow, be gentle.

Today: a small pinch bowl to learn the feel of clay, then a coil pot big enough to cook in. Your first pot will be lumpy. Lumpy pots boil water just fine.

Steps

  1. Make a pinch bowl first. Roll a ball of clay the size of your fist β€” about 8 cm. Slap it between your palms to drive out air near the surface.
  2. Push your thumb into the middle, slowly, down to a finger's width from the bottom β€” you should feel your thumb through the base but not see it.
  3. Pinch and turn. Squeeze the wall gently between thumb (inside) and fingers (outside), turn a small step, pinch again. Many small pinches, spiralling from the bottom up β€” never one hard squeeze. The bowl opens like a flower, a little each pass. Aim for an even finger-width wall, about 1 cm. Close your eyes and run fingers up the wall: fingertips find thick and thin spots eyes miss. Even matters more than thin β€” see below for why.
  4. Start the coil pot. Pat a pancake about 1 cm thick and as wide as the pot's bottom β€” a hand-span (about 20 cm) makes a good cooking pot.
  5. Roll a coil. Roll a lump under flat palms β€” not fingertips, they make ridges β€” into a snake finger-thick and forearm-long, working from the middle outward so it stays even. A ribbon means too much pressure; lengthwise cracks mean wet your hands. A good coil feels like it rolls itself.
  6. Score and slip β€” mud-weld the coil on. Scratch shallow criss-cross lines (potters say "score") on the base's rim and the coil's underside. Paint both scored faces with slip. Press the coil on all around, wiggling slightly so the rough faces bite. Cut the meeting ends at a slant, score, slip, press. Never lay smooth on smooth: it looks joined but is only leaning β€” a smooth joint is a crack that hasn't opened yet.
  7. Blend every coil in, inside and out. Drag clay from the coil down over the joint with your thumb, short strokes all around, the other hand supporting the wall behind the push. Done means you cannot see or feel where one coil ends and the next begins. This isn't decoration β€” blending welds the coil's clay into the wall's.
  8. Build upward. To swell the pot outward, lay each coil slightly outside the one below; to close toward the neck, slightly inside β€” a finger-width of offset at most, or it slumps. Aim for a rounded shape, wide belly, narrower mouth: curves spread stress and heat; corners collect them.
  9. Rest when the walls get tired. Soft clay carries about a hand-height of wall. When walls bulge or the rim goes oval, stop; let it stiffen in the shade an hour or two until the lower wall feels like cheese, then score, slip, and build on. Keep the rim under a damp leaf or cloth so it stays weldable. Big pots are built in stages.
  10. Scrape and true the walls. Once slightly firmed, scrape with your shell or stick β€” long light strokes, inside and out β€” shaving thick spots until the wall answers your fingers the same everywhere. Smooth the rim with a wet finger. Flatten the base gently, or leave it round for coals (round bottoms heat evenly and crack less).
  11. Wait for leather-hard, then finish. Let the pot stiffen until it feels like hard cheese or a bar of soap: cool, firm, not sticky, not yet pale. Potters call this leather-hard β€” the golden hour of the craft, when the pot holds its shape but still forgives. Now trim the base, carve decoration, add handles or lugs (small clay ears to grip the pot by): score, slip, press, blend β€” the same mud-weld as always.
  12. Burnish for a pot that sheds water. At leather-hard, rub the outside with your pebble in small circling strokes, just hard enough to leave a shiny track. Cover the whole pot, let it stiffen, go over it again. Dull mud becomes a soft low shine β€” and sheds water noticeably better, even unglazed.
  13. Dry slowly to bone-dry. Set both pots in the shade, off the ground, out of any breeze, for several days β€” a week is not too long. Turn them daily so all sides dry alike. Bone-dry feels chalky, room-warm against your cheek instead of cool, and surprisingly light: the water has gone. Bone-dry is also most fragile β€” lift with two cradling hands, never by the rim. How it works

Clay is made of flat plates, thousands of times smaller than you can see β€” a heap of microscopic playing cards. Between the plates sits a thin film of water, and that water is the whole secret: it lets the plates slide over each other, and makes them cling, both at once. Now every rule turns transparent.

Why pinch and coil work at all: press gently and the plates slide on their water films into the new shape β€” and stay, glued there by the same films. No grain, no fibres, nothing fights you. But plates can only slide as fast as the water lets them: pull or bend quickly and they can't rearrange in time, so they let go, and the clay tears. That is clay's whole personality β€” obedient to patience, merciless to hurry.

Why joints must be scored and slipped: press two smooth lumps together and you've laid one flat deck of cards against another β€” touching, not connected. Scoring makes plates jut out every which way on both faces; slip floods the gap with loose, very wet plates free to move. Press, and the rough faces interlock through the slip like laced fingers. A weld in mud. Skip it, and the joint survives shaping but opens when shrinking pulls on it.

Why pots shrink, and why drying is a ladder: drying is water leaving from between the plates. As each film thins, its plates pull closer β€” millions of tiny gaps closing add up to the whole pot getting smaller. Soft clay has thick films: everything slides. At leather-hard the films have thinned until the plates lock β€” the pot keeps its shape but the surface still yields, which is exactly why that's the moment to trim, carve, and weld on handles. At bone-dry the films are nearly gone: chalky, featherlight, done shrinking β€” and weakest, because the water that made the plates cling has left; now they merely rest against each other, held by almost nothing. Soft, leather-hard, bone-dry: three rungs of one ladder, each rung with less water than the last.

Why uneven drying kills: edges, rims, and thin parts lose water first, finishing their shrink while thick damp parts are still full-sized. A finished part welded to a still-shrinking part must tear along the border. Slow, even drying keeps the whole pot on the same rung of the ladder β€” that is all "dry in the shade" means.

Why burnishing shines: the pebble lines the surface plates flat, all lying the same way, like stroking fur smooth. Plates all lying flat the same way act like tiny mirrors facing together β€” that is the shine β€” and they leave fewer gaps between them, so water finds fewer doorways in.

One idea under everything: let the water leave evenly, so every part shrinks by the same amount at the same time. Uneven shrinking is what cracking is.
