Gather tinder and firewood
Collect the fluffy dry stuff that catches a spark, and sort wood from thin sticks to thick logs.
Most fires fail before they start. Not because the spark was bad, but because the wood was not ready. A flame is like a baby: at first it can only eat the tiniest, driest food, and it grows in stages. Gather the right materials first β and enough of them β and lighting the fire later becomes the easy part.
You are collecting three sizes of fuel. Tinder is the fluffy, hair-thin stuff that catches a spark. Kindling is thin sticks that catch from burning tinder. Fuel wood is the thick pieces that burn for a long time. They form a ladder the flame climbs one rung at a time. Gather all three before you strike a single spark β a lit fire gives you no time to go shopping.
One idea runs under everything here: fire feeds on surface β the outside skin of a thing β not on its bulk. A log and that same log shaved into curls are the same wood, but the curls give the flame a thousand times more skin to bite. The next hour is really just collecting surface, keeping it dry, and sorting it by size.
You need
- Your hands and eyes β nothing else is required.
- Dry weather sense β the driest material is up off the ground. Soil wicks water upward like a sponge, so anything lying on it soaks up damp even on a sunny day.
- A dry place to stash your pile β under a rock ledge, inside your shirt, or on a raised bed of bark. Wet tinder is useless tinder; one drizzle can undo an hour of work.
- Optional: a knife or sharp stone β for scraping bark into fluff, splitting damp sticks to reach the dry inside, and carving feather sticks (curly shavings β see the steps).
Steps
- Gather tinder first β a bundle at least the size of a grapefruit. Tinder is anything dry, dead, and thinner than a match. Look for:
- Dry dead grass, crushed dead leaves, and dead pine needles β a pinch should crumble to dust and threads between your palms.
- Papery bark you can peel in thin curls β birch bark is the champion. Its natural oils bead water off, so it lights even damp, with a black-smoking, hungry flame. Peel only loose bark or dead trees; stripping a living trunk wounds the tree.
- Fluffy seed heads β cattail down, thistle fluff, milkweed silk. They flash like a camera and die in a second β they are nearly all surface with almost nothing behind it, so the flame swallows them in one gulp and has nothing left to eat. Use them as the spark-catcher inside slower tinder, never alone.
- Inner bark of dead cedar, juniper, or similar stringy-barked trees, rubbed between your palms until it breaks into soft fiber like coarse hair β done right it feels like a dry beard.
- Fatwood, if pines grow near you: resin-soaked wood at the base of dead branches and in old stumps, where the tree's sticky sap (resin) concentrated as it died. It is heavy, smells sharply of turpentine when scraped β a piney sting in the nose, the resin's own scent β and its shavings light even soaking wet β resin repels water and burns hot. A thumb-sized piece is treasure; shave it, don't burn it whole.
- Fluff the tinder. Rub, shred, and tease it apart until light passes through. You are manufacturing surface: every tear doubles the skin the flame can grab. Shape it loosely, like a bird's nest with a dent where your spark will land. A tight wad undoes your work β air must move through it.
- Gather kindling β sorted into three thickness grades, each roughly double the one before, because a young flame can only ignite wood about twice as thick as what it is currently burning:
- Match-thin to pencil-thin (2β7 mm): two big handfuls, sticks about forearm length (30β40 cm).
- Pencil-thin to finger-thick (7β15 mm): a full armload.
- Finger-thick to thumb-thick (15β25 mm): another armload.
- Take dead wood that is still standing or hanging, never lying on the ground. A dead branch caught in another tree, or a bare dead sapling still upright, sheds rain down its bark the way a roof does, and wind dries it between showers. Ground wood sits on soil that wicks moisture into it day and night. Snap-test everything: bend the stick sharply. Dry wood breaks with a loud, clean crack. If it bends or tears quietly, it is wet or green (still alive) β leave it. Your ears are a better moisture meter than your eyes.
- If everything is damp, carve feather sticks. Take a dry-cored stick about thumb-thick, brace one end against a log, and shave long thin curls down its side β always cutting away from your body and with no part of you below the blade's path β stopping each curl before it detaches, so the stick wears a skirt of paper-thin curls. You have turned kindling into tinder by carving new surface into it. Three feather sticks can start a fire in rain that soaked every leaf in the forest.
- Gather fuel wood β wrist-thick to arm-thick pieces, forearm to leg length (40 cm to 1 m). A knee-high stack feeds a small cooking fire for an evening; a hip-high stack sees you through a cold night.
- Gather double what you think you need. Everyone runs out. In the dark, tired, you burn the pile twice as fast as you guessed in daylight. A fire that dies at midnight because the pile ran dry is the most common firewood mistake there is.
- Sort the pile by size and keep it dry, tinder most protected of all β inside your jacket if the sky threatens. Lay kindling and fuel on two base sticks so nothing touches soil. Three graded piles side by side, small to large β now you are ready to build a fire pit.
Watch out
- Wood from the ground feels dry but is not. The top face dried in the sun; the underside drank from the soil all week. The save: snap-test, and if you must use ground wood, split it β water moves slowly through solid wood, so the core is often dry when the outside is soaked.
- Green (living) wood will not burn well. It is up to half water by weight, so the fire spends its heat boiling instead of burning; it hisses, smokes thickly, and can smother a young fire. Signs of life: it bends instead of snapping, the bark grips tight, the inside is pale and moist. Cutting live trees also wastes a living thing for nothing.
- Rain does not stop you β it changes where you shop. Dry tinder hides: under thick evergreen canopies where the ground stays powder-dry, on the underside of leaning logs, under rock overhangs, in the dead lower twigs still attached to spruce and pine trunks (they died in the tree's own shade and hang there, roofed by the branches above), inside the shaggy bark of cedars, and in abandoned bird nests β pre-fluffed tinder built by an expert. Birch bark and fatwood ignore rain entirely.
- Too little tinder is the classic failure. A pinch flares and dies before the kindling warms. You want a full, loose grapefruit-sized nest β and a spare, because first attempts fail often enough that the spare is the plan.
- Do not skip the middle sizes. A flame cannot jump from grass to a log; the log's surface is too small for its bulk, so it drinks the flame's heat without catching. If your fire keeps dying when you add wood, the piece was too big β drop back two sizes and rebuild the ladder.
- The fire's rules start now, while you gather. Plan for bare ground cleared of leaves and roots at least three big steps in every direction β more in wind or a dry spell β with nothing hanging overhead, note the wind (sparks travel), and never leave any flame unattended, even a "tiny" one. When you finish burning, put the fire dead out: drown it, stir the ashes, drown again, then feel with the back of your hand β hover close above the ashes first, then touch; if any spot is too hot to touch, it is not out.
- Never ring or line a fire with wet or river rocks. Water trapped inside heats to steam and can burst the rock like a small bomb, throwing hot shards.
- Smoke is unburned fuel β gas the heat cooked out of the wood that never got to burn β and it poisons slowly. Stay upwind, keep your head out of the plume, never build a fire inside a closed shelter β and never burn charcoal in a tent, snow cave, or any closed space: charcoal gives off carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas that kills sleeping people without waking them.
How it works
Here is the secret that makes sense of every step: fire eats surface, not volume.
Wood does not burn as solid wood. Heat first bakes it and drives flammable gas out β that is the pale smoke off a fresh stick β and the gas is what carries the flame. So burning is a meeting at the surface: heat goes in through the skin, gas comes out through the skin, air touches only the skin. The inside of a log is just a warehouse β packed with fuel, but closed to the flame. The surface is the only door, and everything the fire eats must pass through it.
Now compare a log with that same log shaved into curls. Same wood, same stored energy. But the curls have hundreds of times more skin facing the air, and each curl is so thin it has almost no cold interior to warm up. A spark landing on a curl only has to heat a whisker of material to its catching temperature β about 300 Β°C, where wood releases gas fast enough to ignite. The same spark landing on the log dumps its tiny heat into a huge cold mass and vanishes. That is the whole difference between tinder and fuel wood: not what they are made of, but how much surface they offer per bite. A feather stick is this idea made with a knife β carving surface into wood that had too little.
This also explains the ladder. Burning tinder is a small flame: it can heat something roughly twice as thick as itself to catching point before it burns out, but not much more. So each rung β tinder, match-thin, pencil, finger, thumb, wrist β doubles the thickness, and the growing flame always finds a next meal it is just strong enough to ignite. Skip a rung and the flame meets a piece it cannot heat in time; the piece steals warmth, gives none back, and the fire starves.
Water is the enemy because it cuts in line. Before wood can reach 300 Β°C, every drop of water in it must boil away at 100 Β°C, and boiling water swallows enormous heat. Wet wood is wood with a bodyguard: whatever heat you throw at it, the water steps in front and takes first. That is why the snap test works (dry wood is stiff and cracks; wet wood is leathery and bends), why standing dead wood beats ground wood (bark sheds rain like a roof, soil wicks water like a sponge), and why birch bark and fatwood are royalty: their oils and resin shove water off and then burn hotter than the wood itself.
Surface catches. Thickness doubles. Water cuts in line. Know those three, and you can walk into any forest and see the fire hiding in it.
