Make a safe fire pit and lay a fire

Clear the ground, ring it with stone or bare earth, stack tinder and sticks so a tiny flame can grow, and know how you will put it out.

A fire is a tool with no handle. It goes where the fuel is, and it does not care whose fuel it is. The pit is what keeps it yours. A good pit also makes lighting easier: a fire laid well catches from one small flame with no fiddling, while a bad heap can swallow a hundred sparks and give nothing back.

Build the pit and lay the fire before you try to make any flame or ember. When you finally get one, it will be small and short-lived β€” everything must be ready and waiting. The lay is a machine built in advance, so one weak flame can feed itself into a strong one with no help from you. And know, before the first spark, exactly how this fire ends β€” a fire you cannot put out is a fire you do not own.

Steps

  1. Choose the spot. Flat ground, sheltered from strong wind, at least 3 metres (10 feet) from anything that can burn β€” bushes, dry grass, wood piles, shelters β€” and with open sky above, no branches within twice your height.
  2. Clear a circle down to bare earth, about 2 metres (6 feet) across. Scrape away every leaf, root, and bit of dry grass. In forest soil, dig through the dark, root-filled layer to the pale mineral dirt below β€” the dark layer itself can smoulder (burn slowly without flame) underground for days. Done means nothing a match could light is left in the circle.
  3. Dig a shallow pit in the centre, a hand-depth deep (10–15 cm) and as wide as your forearm is long (roughly 40–50 cm). The pit shields the young flame from wind. No deeper β€” the same walls that block the wind also block fresh air, and a deep hole starves the fire.
  4. Ring the pit with dry stones, fist-sized or bigger, if stones are around. The ring stops embers rolling out. No stones? A raised lip of packed dirt works. Take stones only from dry, high ground β€” never a stream or damp hollow.
  5. Place your extinguisher β€” water or dirt pile β€” beside the pit, on the upwind side (the side the wind comes from), so smoke never blows between you and it. Do this now, not later.
  6. Read the wind β€” which cheek does the breeze touch? β€” then lay the fire. The simple, reliable lay is the teepee:
    • Put dry bark or a dry flat stone on the pit floor as a base, so the ground cannot drink the flame's first heat.
    • Set your tinder nest on it β€” a loose ball of the finest, driest stuff you have, two cupped hands in size.
    • Lean your thinnest sticks (match- to pencil-thin) over the tinder in a cone, like a tiny tent. Leave a fist-wide doorway on the side the wind comes from β€” for your flame to enter, and the breeze behind it.
    • Lean pencil- to finger-thick sticks over those, still loose. Fire needs air gaps; if you can't see through the pile anywhere, it's too tight.
  7. Pick a different lay if the job asks for one:
    • Lean-to β€” in wind. Push a wrist-thick stick into the ground at a low angle, pointing into the wind; lean kindling against its sheltered side, over the tinder β€” a built-in windbreak.
    • Log cabin β€” for cooking. Lay pairs of thumb- to wrist-thick sticks in a square, each pair crossing the last, tinder and teepee inside. It burns down into a flat, steady bed of coals β€” and coals, not flames, cook food evenly.
    • Star β€” to save fuel through a long night. Once you have coals, lay five or six long logs flat like wheel spokes, tips meeting in the middle. Only the tips burn; push each log inward as it shortens.
  8. Stage the next sizes in reach: thumb-thick, then wrist-thick. Add each size only when the fire eats the current one eagerly β€” crackling, flames taller than the pile, no thick white smoke. Heavy smoke and hissing mean too much, too wet, or too soon. Feed one stick at a time, laid across the flames, never dropped.
  9. Build a reflector if you want the heat. Stack a low wall β€” big dry stones, or green (freshly cut, sap-wet) logs that won't easily catch β€” half a metre behind the fire, opposite you. It bounces some of the escaping heat back at you and blocks the wind β€” noticeably more warmth from the same wood, though no wall doubles it.
  10. Know your shutdown, in this order: stop feeding early; let it burn down to coals; drown with water until the hissing stops completely; stir the wet ash with a stick, turning up buried coals; drown again; then hold the back of your hand near the ashes, then closer, then touch. Any warmth β€” repeat. Cold to the wrist means out; nothing less does. With dirt: stir it through the coals again and again until cold β€” never just bury them; buried coals stay hot for days.

How it works

Every fire stands on three legs, like a three-legged stool: heat, fuel, and air. Take away any leg and the stool tips over β€” the fire goes out. Heat splits wood into burnable gas (this splitting is called pyrolysis β€” and the gas, not the solid wood, is what actually burns). The gas needs fresh air, because burning is just fuel joining violently with the oxygen in air. And the burning must make enough new heat to keep splitting more wood. Heat makes gas, gas plus air makes flame, flame makes heat: a loop. Your whole job, tinder to bonfire, is keeping that loop turning.

Every lay is just a different answer to the question "how do I hand the young flame all three legs at once?" The teepee points every stick over the tinder so air flows in at the base and the flame climbs. The lean-to builds the windbreak into the lay, guarding the heat leg on gusty days. The log cabin trades tall flames for a steady platform that collapses into an even bed of coals β€” controlled heat for cooking. The star rations the fuel leg: only the tips sit in the fire, so you spend logs a few centimetres at a time.

Why do flames climb? Hot air is thinner than cold air, so it floats upward like a bubble in water β€” and as it rises through the lay, it preheats the sticks above, splitting them into gas before the flame even arrives. Fire spreads fastest where its own hot air goes: up the lay, up a slope, up a tree. That is why the teepee works, why wildfire races uphill, and why the branch above your pit is in more danger than the grass beside it.

Wind is the air leg with a temper. A little feeds fresh oxygen in; too much blows the hot gas away before it can pay its heat back into the wood β€” the fire's paycheck stolen before it's spent. Enough to feed, not enough to steal.

The reflector works because fire throws heat the way a lamp throws light β€” straight lines, every direction (heat travelling as invisible light is called radiation). A wall behind the fire catches part of the heat flying the other way and sends some of it back at you β€” rough stone and wood soak up more than they bounce, so it is a helper, not a mirror.

Putting a fire out is the same stool trick in reverse β€” you knock the legs out on purpose. Water kills the heat leg twice: it soaks up heat, and turning to steam soaks up even more. Stirring breaks the ash blanket so no coal keeps a private pocket of warmth. Dirt smothers the air leg. Peat and roots are dangerous precisely because they hide a slow ember where all three legs quietly survive β€” warm, fed, barely aired β€” for days. So the test is not your eyes. It is your wrist, on cold ash.
