Start a fire with sparks

Strike sparks from hard stone and steel into your tinder and blow the glow gently into flame.

A spark is a tiny piece of burning metal, hotter than 800 Β°C but smaller than a grain of sand. It lives for less than a second. Your whole job is to give it a soft, dry bed where its heat can settle and spread. People made fire this way for thousands of years: strike, catch, breathe. It asks for patience, not strength.

The tool pair is a hard stone and a piece of steel β€” and here is the surprise: the stone is the knife, and the steel is the fuel. The sharp stone edge shaves off a curl of steel so thin that the heat of the shaving sets it burning white-hot. That burning shaving is your spark. A spark is fiercely hot but so tiny it has almost no heat to give β€” like one drop of boiling water, scalding but gone in a blink β€” so ordinary tinder ignores it. The craft climbs in three stages β€” catch the spark, grow the glow, then ask for flame β€” and skipping a stage breaks it.

Steps

  1. Get everything ready first. Laid fire in the pit, ground cleared of anything burnable a good two metres around β€” sparks fly farther than you think, and wind carries them, tinder nest within reach, spark catcher in hand. Check the wind β€” a breeze steals sparks and later fans flames β€” and work low, your body the windbreak. Once a spark catches, your hands are full.
  2. Hold the stone in one hand with a sharp edge facing up and slightly away. Lay a piece of char cloth the size of a large postage stamp β€” about 3 cm square β€” flat on the stone, right behind the edge, pinned under your thumb, just above where sparks are born so they land straight onto it.
  3. Strike down and past the edge with the steel β€” a fast, glancing scrape at a shallow angle, around 30 degrees, letting the stone's edge shave the steel as it passes. Wrist snap, not arm swing; speed matters more than force, because speed is what heats the shaving. A good strike gives a sharp tick and a spray of orange; a dull clack means you're hitting flat, not scraping past.
  4. Watch the char, not the sparks. You're waiting for one spark to take hold: a tiny orange dot that stays after the flash and slowly grows a grey ring. Ten strikes or a hundred β€” keep the angle, keep going. When sparks thin out, the edge has dulled; turn to a fresh part of it.
  5. Feed the glow air, gently. A soft breath makes the dot spread across the char like a slow sunrise β€” a glow this young can be blown out or clean off, so stay gentle. Folding a second piece of char against the first holds heat far better.
  6. Move the glowing char into the heart of your tinder nest. Open a hollow β€” a bird's nest, and the ember its egg β€” and fold it loosely closed, like a bun around filling, leaving gaps for air. Fine fibre must touch the glow all around; heat travels only where things touch.
  7. Blow it into flame. Pick the nest up β€” the ground steals heat β€” and hold it at arm's length, a little above your face, so smoke slides past your eyes. Give long, steady breaths, the kind that cool soup, not blow out candles, pausing between each, face turned aside for fresh air. The nest comes alive β€” faint warmth, then real heat β€” and the smoke keeps score: thin white is working, thick yellow-grey is flame in seconds. Then whoomph β€” flame, often all at once. Don't flinch and drop it; you were expecting this.
  8. Set the burning nest into the doorway of your laid fire, under the thin sticks, flame-side up so fire climbs into the wood above. Let the small sticks catch, then feed sizes upward.
  9. Stay with your fire, and kill it completely when done. Never walk away from a flame β€” a minute of wind is all it needs to leave the pit. To put it out: drown with water, stir the wet ashes to the bottom, drown again, then hold the back of your hand close over the ashes. Any warmth means it's not out β€” repeat until stone cold.

How it works

Everything in this craft follows from one picture: the stone is the knife, and the steel is the fuel.

Most people assume you're "knocking fire out of flint." It's the opposite. Flint, chert, and quartzite are glassy stones, harder than steel, breaking to edges sharp enough to shave metal. Scraped fast across steel, that edge peels off a curl thinner than a hair. Why does the shaving burn? Two reasons. First, the violent scrape dumps heat into it β€” the same reason a drill bit gets too hot to touch β€” and the shaving is so tiny the heat has nowhere to spread, so the whole curl glows at once. Second, iron wants to burn in air: rust is iron burning in extreme slow motion. A solid bar can't burn because air only touches its outside, but a shaving is almost all surface β€” so the hot curl catches fire, and the carbon inside it flares white-hot. That's why stainless steel fails: it's made to refuse air, and what refuses rust refuses fire. And it's why the stone's only jobs are to be harder than steel and freshly sharp β€” the stone is never spent, only blunted, because the sparks were never in it.

Why char and not grass? Fresh plant matter isn't ready to burn β€” it's fuel mixed with water and heavy tar-like gases, and flame must first spend heat boiling those away. A spark the size of a sand grain has no heat to spare. Charring does that spending in advance: baking cloth in a closed tin drives out the water and gases as that jet of smoke, leaving nearly pure carbon β€” fuel that has already paid its entrance fee, needing only a touch of heat to glow. (Pyrite, a brassy metal-bearing stone, is the older road: struck against flint it gives fainter sparks that need the same charred bed β€” fire before anyone had steel.)

Last, ember to flame is a balancing act with air. Air does two opposite things at once: a glow must eat it to burn, yet moving air also carries heat away β€” the same heat-stealing that cools your soup. Blow too hard and the rushing air robs the young ember faster than it can make heat. Too soft and the glow starves for air. The nest is a bird's nest and the ember its egg: long, gentle, steady breaths feed it more than they cool it, and the glow spreads fibre to fibre wherever things touch. Grow it steadily and the heat climbs until the fibres flash into flame all at once. Strike, catch, breathe β€” each stage lifts the heat one step, until fire can stand on its own.
