Build a hand barrow or cart
One wheel, two handles, and a frame move a whole harvest with half the work.
Your back can carry maybe 20 to 30 kilograms for a long walk. A one-wheel barrow carries 60 to 100 kilograms, because the wheel holds most of the weight and you only steer and push. That is the whole trick: put the load on the wheel, not on your spine. One good barrow turns a week of hauling firewood, stones, or harvest into a day.
A barrow with one wheel is better than a cart with two for rough ground. It fits on a narrow path, turns on the spot, and never gets one wheel stuck in a hole while the other rides high.
You need
- A finished wheel and axle — a solid wooden disc about 40 to 60 centimetres across, with a round axle stub on each side. Smaller wheels drop into every hole; bigger ones roll over them.
- Two long poles for handles — straight, strong wood like ash or oak, about 1.8 to 2 metres long and as thick as your wrist. These are the spine of the barrow. Green (fresh-cut) wood is heavy and warps; use wood dried for some months if you can.
- Three or four cross-pieces — shorter sticks, about 50 to 70 centimetres, to join the two poles into a ladder shape.
- Boards or woven sticks for the bed — the flat part that holds the load. Split planks are best; tight-woven branches (like a fence panel) also work.
- Two short legs — so the barrow stands level when you set it down.
- Cord or pegs to join everything — strong lashing cord, or wooden pegs driven into drilled holes. Pegs last longer.
- A knife, an axe with a good handle, and something to drill or burn holes — a hard pointed stone or a fire-heated metal rod both make holes.
Steps
- Lay the two handle poles on the ground, side by side, about 50 centimetres apart at one end and 60 to 70 centimetres apart at the other. The narrow end is the front, where the wheel goes.
- Join them with cross-pieces into a ladder: one cross-piece near the front, one in the middle, one or two at the back before the handle grips.
- Notch each joint — cut a shallow flat seat in both sticks so they sit into each other — then lash or peg them. A notched joint cannot slide.
- Cut the axle seats. At the front end of each pole, cut a half-round notch on the underside, just big enough for the axle stubs to sit and spin in.
- Rub fat, tallow, or wax in the notch. This is your bearing — the surface the axle turns against. Grease halves the pushing effort.
- Fit the wheel between the two poles, axle stubs in the notches. Cap each notch with a small lashed or pegged strap of wood so the axle cannot jump out, but not so tight it cannot spin. Spin the wheel by hand; it should turn freely for a second or two.
- Fix the bed. Lay boards across the middle cross-pieces and peg or lash them down. Add low side walls (10 to 20 centimetres) if you will carry loose things like grain or gravel.
- Add the legs. Peg two straight sticks under the frame near the back, angled slightly forward, so the resting barrow stands with the bed roughly level.
- Test with a light load first. Push 10 kilograms around, then 30, then more. Watch every joint. Tighten what creaks before it breaks.
- Load it right: put the load as close to the wheel as you can. Weight over the wheel is carried by the wheel. Weight over the handles is carried by you.
Watch out
- Wheel too small. A wheel under 30 centimetres stalls in every rut. If your paths are rough, make the wheel bigger, not the barrow lighter.
- Dry, tight axle. If the wheel squeals and drags, stop and grease it. A dry bearing eats itself in a day of work.
- Lashings only, no notches. Cord alone stretches and the frame goes crooked under load. Always notch first, then lash or peg.
- Overloading downhill. A loaded barrow going downhill pushes you. Zigzag down slopes, and never load more than you can hold back.
- Handles too low or too high. Your arms should hang almost straight when lifting the grips. If you must bend your back to lift, the handles are wrong — recut them, don't wreck your spine.
How it works
A barrow is a lever. The wheel is the pivot, the load sits near it, and your hands push down far away at the handles. The farther your hands are from the wheel, and the closer the load is to it, the less of the weight you feel. That is why the same rules — long handles, load forward — make every barrow lighter to push.
