Build a sled to drag heavy loads
Two smooth runners and a lashed frame let you drag what you could never lift.
Before there were wheels, there were sleds — and sleds never went away. A sled slides over snow, wet grass, mud, and rough ground where a wheel would sink or break. With one, a single person can drag three to five times what they could carry on their back: firewood, a deer, stones for a wall, a sack of clay.
The whole trick is two runners — the long smooth strips that touch the ground — joined by crossbars into a frame that holds the load up off the dirt.
You need
- Two runner poles — straight, arm-thick (5–8 cm), 1.5–2 m long. Best of all: poles with a natural upward bend at one end, so the front tip curves up like a ski. Hard, smooth-barked wood lasts longest.
- Three or four crossbars — wrist-thick, 50–70 cm long. These sit across the runners and carry the load.
- Rope or cordage, 10 m or more — enough for the lashings (the rope bindings that hold the frame together) plus a pull rope.
- A knife or axe — to smooth the runners and cut shallow notches.
- Grease (optional) — animal fat, tallow, or even soap, rubbed on the runners to make them slide better.
Steps
- Pick your runners. Curved-at-one-end poles are gold. If yours are straight, carve a long rising slope on the front underside of each, so the tip lifts off the ground like a ski tip.
- Smooth the undersides. Shave off all bark, knots, and bumps along the bottom face. Every bump is a brake.
- Lay the runners parallel, 40–60 cm apart, curved tips forward and pointing up.
- Cut shallow notches — about a finger deep — in the top of each runner where the crossbars will sit. Notches stop the bars sliding around.
- Lash each crossbar down with a tight square lashing at both ends. If you wet the cord first, it shrinks as it dries and grips harder.
- Tie the pull rope to the front tip of each runner so the two lines meet in a Y about a metre ahead of the sled. Pulling from both tips keeps the sled straight, and pulling slightly upward lifts the nose over bumps.
- Load it low and tied down. Heaviest things at the bottom, centred or slightly toward the back. Tie the load to the crossbars so it cannot shift.
- Test it. Drag it empty, then half loaded, then full. Retighten every lashing after the first hour of use — new lashings always settle.
Watch out
- A square-cut front digs into the ground and stops you dead. Carve a real rising curve on the nose, and keep the pull rope angled upward.
- Lashings loosen with use. Check them after the first hour and at every rest. A loose frame twists and snaps.
- A high or front-heavy load tips the sled or buries the nose. Keep it low, centred, tied down.
- Going downhill, the sled chases you. Walk beside it, never below it. On steep ground, tie a second rope to the back and have someone hold it as a brake.
- Rocks and dry sand chew up runners fast. Sleds shine on snow, wet grass, mud, and pine needles. On dry rough ground, grease the runners and accept that you will re-smooth them often.
How it works
Friction is the force that fights two surfaces sliding past each other. Smooth, narrow, greased runners cut that force way down, and the upturned nose turns "crashing into every bump" into "riding over it." On slick ground like snow or wet grass, the pull you need can drop to a tenth of the load's weight — which is why a sled turns one tired back into a small cart's worth of carrying.
