Lift heavy things with ropes and poles

A tripod of poles and a good rope let one person raise a beam or pull a log out of a river.

Some jobs are not about dragging β€” they are about lifting. Raising a roof beam, hauling a stone out of a pit, pulling a waterlogged log up a riverbank. Your arms alone can lift maybe 30–50 kg. A tripod β€” three poles lashed together at the top, standing like a giant's easel β€” plus a rope rigged the right way lets one careful person lift several times that, and set it down gently.

The rope trick is called mechanical advantage: arrange the rope so two strands share the load, and your hands only pull half the weight. You pay for it by pulling twice as much rope. Force traded for distance β€” that is the whole secret.

Steps

  1. Test the rope first. Hard pull by two people, then inspect. Do this every day you use it.
  2. Lay the three poles side by side, tops level, and bind them 30–40 cm below the tops with a tripod lashing: wrap all three together many times, then wind the cord between the poles to tighten the wraps, and tie off hard.
  3. Stand it up with a helper and spread the feet into a wide triangle, each foot 1.5–2 m from the others. Wider is more stable but lifts less high.
  4. Stop the feet sliding. Dig each foot a few centimetres into the ground, and on smooth or sloping ground tie a rope loop around all three feet (a hobble) or drive a stake outside each one. Sliding feet are how tripods fall.
  5. Hang the lifting rope over the head β€” over a greased crossbar resting in the crotch of the poles, or through your pulley.
  6. For heavy loads, rig two-to-one: tie one end of the rope to the tripod head, run it down and through a strong loop or hook on the load, back up over the head, and down to your hands. Now two strands hold the load and each carries half.
  7. Pull smooth and steady, using your body weight, not just your arms. Hand over hand, no jerking.
  8. Before you touch the load, tie it off: wrap the rope twice around a tripod leg β€” the wraps grip by friction β€” then finish with two half hitches. Only then put your hands near the load.

How it works

When two strands of rope hold a load, each strand carries half the weight β€” so your hands, pulling on one strand, supply only half. But to raise the load one metre you must pull in two metres of rope. No force is created or destroyed; it is exchanged for distance. A pulley wheel matters because rolling wastes far less effort than scraping β€” the same reason wheels beat dragging.
