Spin a potter's wheel

A heavy spinning disc lets you pull up round, even pots in minutes instead of hours.

Coiling a pot by hand takes an hour and comes out a little lopsided, because your hands move around the pot. A potter's wheel flips that: the pot spins, your hands hold still, and the spinning itself makes the pot round. The heart of the machine is not the little platform the clay sits on β€” it is the flywheel, a disc so heavy that once spun, it keeps spinning while you work. Weight is the whole trick: the wheel stores your effort and pays it back as long, smooth turning.

This one machine changes what a village can own: a coil-builder makes three pots in a day, a practised wheel potter makes thirty β€” cheap, matched, and everywhere. Fair warning, though: the wheel is a machine you can build in two days and a skill that takes two weeks of daily failure to begin to own. Every potter's first twenty attempts collapse. That is the normal price β€” failed clay goes back in the bucket and costs nothing.

  1. Balance the wheel first, and be fussy. Set the disc on its pivot and spin it hard: it should turn freely for a minute, quiet and level. Watch the rim edge-on against a fixed mark: if it rises and falls, shave the high side; if the disc drifts in a circle, shift the rim weights until it runs true. Hang a weighted string beside the pivot to check the axle stands plumb β€” exactly upright. A wobbling wheel makes wobbling pots, and no skill fixes that.
  2. Knead the clay by pressing and folding it on a board, fifty times, like stiff dough β€” potters call this wedging. Cut the lump in half now and then: the face should be smooth as cheese, no holes. Every hidden air bubble becomes a bump under your fingers, or a blister in the kiln. Keep clay and scraps wet, always β€” dry scraps become dust, and dust hurts lungs.
  3. Slap a grapefruit-sized ball (a double handful, about 1 kg) hard onto the exact centre of the dry wheel head so it sticks. Small is right for learning; big lumps punish mistakes harder.
  4. Spin up the wheel β€” fast and steady, counter-clockwise if you are right-handed, until the rim runs about as fast as your eye can comfortably follow. Re-spin whenever it slows; a flywheel forgives pauses. Never brake it with your fingers β€” use the stick or let it coast.
  5. Centre the clay. Wet your hands. Brace both elbows hard on your knees β€” your arms become part of the machine's frame. Cup the spinning lump with both palms and squeeze steadily inward and slightly down. The secret: you are not shaping the clay. You hold still, and the spin drags every high spot past your unmoving hands until only the one shape that cannot bump you remains β€” a true circle. Every knock you feel is clay off-centre; do not chase it, brace harder and wait. Suddenly the shaking stops and the lump runs so still it seems motionless β€” that eerie stillness is "centred". Release your hands slowly; a sudden let-go knocks it back off. Expect this step to take days. It is the whole apprenticeship.
  6. Open it. Wheel still fast, press both thumbs slowly straight down into the centre, stopping a thumb's width β€” about 2 cm β€” from the wheel head. Draw them gently apart to widen the hole into a thick ring with a flat floor. Press the floor down once, centre outward: this packs the base so it will not crack in a curling line as it dries.
  7. Pull up the walls. Slow the wheel to a middling pace. One fingertip inside, knuckle outside, pinch the wall lightly between them at the very bottom, then draw both hands slowly upward together. The wall rises and thins through your fingers β€” the spin brings every part of the wall to you, so one slow lift works the whole pot. A good pull lasts a slow breath; three patient pulls beat ten hurried ones. Keep hands wet β€” dry fingers drag and tear. Stop when the wall is little-finger thick and even, the base a full finger thick.
  8. Shape and finish β€” slowly. Drop the wheel to a lazy turn. Press the wooden rib against the outside, fingers supporting inside, to smooth and set the curve. Steady the rim last between two wet fingertips. Shape the rim slow: spinning clay flings outward, and the wall's own strength is all that holds it in β€” at the thin rim there is the least clay to hold on, so there the fling wins, flaring your pot open like a trumpet.
  9. Cut it free. Stop the wheel. Pull the cord tight and flat under the pot in one pass, then slide the pot onto a board, touching low where the wall is thick. Dry slowly, out of sun and wind.
  10. Trim at leather-hard. After a day the pot turns leather-hard β€” firm like cheese rind, too stiff to bend but soft enough to carve. Centre it upside down on the wheel, steady it with three soft clay lumps, spin slowly, and shave the thick base into a neat foot ring β€” a raised ring of clay left standing on the underside, which the finished pot sits on. Too soon and it dents; too late and it chips. Then dry fully β€” water trapped in a kiln turns to steam and bursts the pot like a small bomb. Bone-dry or it does not go in the fire.

How it works

The wheel head barely matters β€” any light board on a pin spins too. The invention is the flywheel, and the idea behind it is momentum: moving mass wants to keep moving. A light disc dies the moment you stop pushing. A heavy one is hard to start, but once turning it hoards every kick and pays them back as smooth, even spin β€” a bank for effort. You deposit ten sharp kicks; it pays out a minute of steady turning while both hands stay free. Muscle works in jerks, pots need patience, and the flywheel turns jerks into patience.

Where the weight sits matters as much as how much. Mass far out at the rim rides a bigger circle each turn β€” it moves farther, so it carries more motion for the same weight. A stone ring at the edge banks several times the spin of the same stones piled at the centre. That is why every old wheel is heavy at the edge and light in the middle.

Centring looks like the potter shaping the clay. It is the opposite: the potter holds still and the spin does the shaping. Braced, unmoving hands are a wall; the turning clay drags every high spot past that wall, and the wall shaves it off. The only shape that can slip past still hands without touching them anywhere is a perfect circle β€” so a circle is what you get, not because you drew one, but because nothing else survives. Every wobble your hands feel is clay still off-centre. You brace; you never chase.

Throwing works the same way. Your two fingertips pinch one tiny spot of wall β€” and the spin delivers the whole ring of the wall through that pinch, once per turn. One slow lift works every point of the pot equally, so roundness comes free. The wheel replaces a hundred coil-and-smooth passes with three pulls. That is why one potter can suddenly supply a village.

Speed must match the stage because spinning clay flings outward β€” and that is momentum again: every speck of the clay wants to keep moving in a straight line, and for something riding a circle, straight ahead leads out of the circle. The faster the spin, the harder each speck tugs to leave, so the fling grows with speed β€” a friend when centring, a menace at the thin rim. Under it all sits the humblest part: a greased hard peg in a greased hard socket, the bow-drill's bearing grown up to carry 30 kg. Keep it oiled, keep the axle plumb, the head level, trim at leather-hard β€” and the machine will outlive you.
