Keep a calendar

Track the moon's faces and the sun's swing along the horizon so planting, harvest, and feasts come at the right time.

Plant too early and frost kills the seedlings; too late and the grain never ripens. Season-signs give rough warnings; a calendar turns them into a count you can plan by: "plant 30 days after midwinter's third moon." A calendar is two clocks in the sky read together: the moon for short stretches, the sun for the year.

Neither clock needs any tool but your eyes, a fixed place to stand, and the patience to look every day. It takes a season because you are building a record, not a thing.

Steps

  1. Start the day-count. Every morning, cut one notch. Do it before anything else so you never lose a day.
  2. Watch the moon. It grows from a thin sliver to full in about 15 days, then shrinks to nothing in 15 more. New moon to new moon is 29 to 30 days — call that a "moon" (a month).
    • Start each moon-count at the first thin evening sliver in the west — far easier to spot than the exact dark night.
    • Twelve moons is about 354 days — 11 days short of a full year, so the moon alone drifts. The sun keeps the truth.
  3. Track the sunrise along the horizon. From your fixed spot, note each clear morning exactly where the sun's edge first appears, and plant a small marker in line with it. Day by day the sunrise point creeps along the horizon — north half the year, south the other.
  4. Catch the turning points. Twice a year the creeping stops, the sun rises in almost the same spot for several days, then turns back. These are the solstices — the sun's "standstills." The one in the cold season is midwinter, the year's anchor.
    • Take the middle day of the standstill stretch as the turning day.
    • Plant a permanent stone in line with each standstill sunrise. Next year the sun will return to your stone.
  5. Check with the noon shadow. Set a straight post upright. Each day around midday, mark the tip of its shortest shadow. The day with the year's longest noon shadow is midwinter; the shortest, midsummer.
  6. Count the year. Tally the days from one midwinter to the next — about 365. Now every date can be counted from midwinter.
  7. Hang your season-signs on the count. Each year, tally how many days after midwinter the last frost came, the river rose, the first rains fell. After two or three years the pattern shows: "plant when it feels right" becomes "plant around day 80."
  8. Fix the moon to the sun. Name the moons ("planting moon," "harvest moon") starting from the first new moon after midwinter. Most years hold 12 moons; about every third year add a 13th to keep the names matching the seasons — add it whenever the moons run visibly early.

How it works

The sunrise point swings along the horizon because the world tips toward and away from the sun over the year — the same tipping that makes the seasons. So the standstills and the seasons keep perfect time, forever. The moon's faces show how much of its sunlit side faces you, a steady 29.5-day beat. Sun for the year, moon for the month, tally for the days: three counts, one calendar.
