Learn your seasons
Watch a full year β frost, rain, heat β so you know when to plant and when to store.
Seeds do not care what day you think it is. They care whether the ground is warm, whether rain is coming, and whether frost β air cold enough to freeze water on the ground β will kill them tonight. A gardener who knows the year plants once and eats; one who guesses plants three times and starves twice. This guide is slow on purpose: you are going to watch one whole year and write it down, so that every year after, you plant on time.
You already know how to read a day's weather from the sky. Now zoom out. A season is just weather that repeats.
You need
- A way to keep a record β a flat stick you notch, a wall you scratch marks on, charcoal on bark, or paper if you have it. Memory alone will fail you; a mark will not.
- A fixed spot to watch from β the same view every day, so changes stand out.
- A container of water left outside overnight β your frost detector. Ice on it in the morning means frost came, even if you slept through it.
- Patience β one mark a day, every day. That is the whole job.
Steps
- Start counting days today. Cut one notch per day on your stick, and a deeper notch every full moon (about every 29β30 days). Twelve to thirteen moons make a year. Now you have a calendar, even with no names for the months.
- Record every frost. Each morning, check your water container. Ice means frost β mark it with a special sign. The two marks that matter most all year are:
- the last spring frost β the final morning with ice before the long warm stretch, and
- the first autumn frost β the first ice after the warm stretch ends.
- The days between them are your growing season: the stretch when tender plants can live outdoors. In mild places it can be 200+ days; in cold places, 90 or fewer.
- Record the rains. Mark wet days differently from dry days. After a year you will see the pattern: steady rain all year, a wet season and a dry season, or dry summers. This tells you whether you must store water and when to sow so seedlings catch the rain.
- Record the heat. Mark the days too hot to work at midday. That block of weeks is when shallow-rooted plants need watering most and when things dry fastest for storage.
- Watch what the living things do. Plants and animals read the seasons better than you do. Note when the first tree leaves open, when a familiar wildflower blooms, when birds arrive or leave, when the first insects swarm. These events shift with the actual warmth of the year, not the calendar β a cold spring delays them and delays your planting too. "Sow when the oak leaves are the size of a mouse's ear" is real knowledge, not a rhyme.
- Mark what food appears when. When do wild berries ripen? When do nuts fall? Whatever the wild does on its own here, your garden can do with help β and those dates tell you when your harvest and storing work will pile up.
- At year's end, read your stick. Find your growing season, your wet months, your hungry gap β the stretch (often late winter and early spring) when old stores run low and nothing new is ready. Plan next year's planting to start right after the last frost, and your storing to be finished before the first one.
Watch out
- One warm week in early spring is a lie. Almost every year has a false spring, then a killing frost. Do not trust warmth until the wild plants trust it β wait for the tree leaves, not the first sunny day.
- One year is a sample, not a law. Frost dates drift by two or three weeks between years. Keep marking every year, and treat your earliest-recorded autumn frost as the deadline for storing.
- Frost pools in low ground. Cold air flows downhill like water. Your valley bottom can freeze while the slope above stays green β watch your own spot, not your neighbour's.
- Losing the record loses the year. Keep the stick somewhere dry and fixed, and copy the key marks (last frost, first frost, rains) somewhere second.
How it works
Seasons come from the sun's height: it climbs the sky toward midsummer and sinks toward midwinter, and the ground warms and cools weeks behind it. That lag is why the coldest mornings come after midwinter and why soil stays cool after the air turns warm. Plants respond to that real warmth in the ground and to day length β which is why watching them beats counting days.
