Dig and line a well

Reach the water under your feet β€” sited clean, shored close behind you, roped to a hand above, and never trusting air you cannot see.

A stream belongs to everyone upstream of you β€” every animal, every neighbour, every dead thing you cannot see. And in a dry year it leaves. Under your feet, meanwhile, there is usually water: filtered by the ground itself, steadier through the seasons, and yours. Digging down to it is the oldest reason a village stays in one place instead of following the rain.

It is also the most dangerous work in this book, and the reason is worth saying plainly before you read another line. Both of the things that kill here are silent, fast, and take the rescuer as readily as the digger. A wall of earth that stood all morning arrives in a second and does not let go. Air that looks exactly like air puts a person to sleep at the bottom of a hole nobody can reach into. Neither announces itself. Wells do not usually kill one person; they kill two or three, one after another, each one climbing down to save the last.

So this page is built around two habits: shore close behind you, and keep a rope on whoever is below. Everything else supports those two.

Steps

  1. Site it clean, and site it high. Uphill and well away from every latrine, dung heap, animal pen, grave, and soakaway β€” at least 30 meters (about 30 long steps), and considerably further if the ground slopes toward you, or if the ground is coarse gravel or cracked rock, which carry filth far and fast. This is the same 30 meters the dig-a-latrine guide gives, from the other end of the same rule. It is not a magic distance where germs politely stop; it is a rough, hard-won minimum that assumes ordinary soil and ordinary luck. When in doubt, go further and go higher. Never dig in a hollow that surface water drains into.
  2. Read the ground for water. Look where the green stays green late in a dry summer, where reeds or willows grow with no stream to explain them, where the ground dips gently. Ask anyone who has dug nearby how deep they went and what they hit β€” one honest answer saves you a week.
  3. Mark a circle about 1.2 metres across β€” roughly chest height on you, laid down flat. Wide enough to swing a short tool and to bring a limp body up; narrow enough that the walls can be held. Round, not square: a circle presses against itself and stands, where corners crumble.
  4. Dig, and shore within about a metre β€” always. Dig a metre, line that metre, dig the next. Never let the unsupported face get taller than your own chest, and never tell yourself you will shore it once you are a bit deeper. The stretch you have not shored is the stretch that kills you, and it goes at the moment your back is turned to it.
  5. Air, in this order, every time: move it first, then test it, then go down. Never the other way about. A shaft left standing overnight may have gathered gas that a lowered flame would light, so the flame is not what you send in to find out β€” fresh air is.
    • Move it, and never with fire. Raise and lower a bucket or folded blanket on the work rope, over and over, to drag fresh air down and stir the bad up. Leave the shaft open to the wind; rig a sheet at the mouth to funnel wind in. Bellows and a hollowed pipe beat everything else here. Give it a long time β€” hours, not minutes, on a still morning.
    • Never light a fire at or in the mouth of a shaft to "draw" it. You would be manufacturing poison and pouring it down the hole β€” the one poison your candle cannot see.
    • Then test, with the candle on a string, having read "The air" below β€” because the test answers one question and is blind to two others. Test again every morning, and after every break.
  6. Send the spoil up, never sideways. Fill the bucket, signal, let the top hand haul. Whoever hauls never leaves the rope. Pile the spoil well back from the edge β€” a heap at the lip loads the very ground your shoring is holding, and undoes it.
  7. Come up often, and come up before you want to. Air goes bad while people work in it, not only before they climb in: a freshly cut face releases gas, and a digger's own breathing eats the oxygen in a still shaft. Short shifts. The top hand watches for muddle, not for shouting β€” if the person below is slow to answer, repeats themselves, sounds cheerful about nothing, or seems dreamy, haul them out immediately and argue about it up here. Muddle is the first symptom and the last warning; by the time they know, they cannot climb.
  8. Stop at water β€” carefully. When water seeps in, go a little deeper if you can bail as you dig; that reserve is what carries you through dry years. But breaking into wet sand or gravel is its own emergency: it can boil up through the floor and run, burying legs to the knee in seconds, undermining your shoring from below and filling the shaft faster than anyone hauls. If the floor turns to porridge, if sand starts moving on its own, or if water comes in hard rather than seeping β€” get out at once, on the rope, and do not go back down that day. Come back and line what you have.
  9. Line it, bottom to top β€” and never let earth stand bare while you do. Lay dry stone against the earth from the bottom up. Take out the temporary shoring only one short stretch at a time, and only immediately before the stone that replaces it goes in β€” the earth behind it is never left unsupported with a person down there. Stone up, timber out, one arm's reach at a time. The lowest few rings stay loose-laid and unmortared on purpose β€” the water must come in through them. Above the water line, tighter is better: that stretch is the wall that keeps dirty surface water out.
  10. Bring the lining above ground and keep going. Build a wall around the mouth, knee-to-waist high. It stops a child falling in, stops slop and washing water running straight back down into the drinking water, and gives you something to lean the cover against.
  11. Slope the ground away and drain it. A hard apron of stone or beaten clay around the mouth, sloping outward, with a channel carrying spilled water well away. Never let a puddle sit against your well.
  12. Cover it. Always. A lid, a slab, a board β€” closed whenever the well is not in use. An open well catches dust, leaves, rain-splash, frogs, and children. Wells drown children more reliably than rivers do, because a well is right there, at home, and always looks solid.
  13. One bucket, and it lives on the hook. A single dedicated bucket and rope for drawing, hung up between uses. A bucket set down on the ground and then lowered carries whatever the ground had on it into everyone's water. This small habit is most of what keeps a well clean.
  14. Still boil it. A good well is far cleaner than a stream and that is not the same as safe. It is still groundwater, and groundwater still moves. Drinking water gets boiled.

The air

Three different things can be wrong with the air down there. They are not one problem, and one test does not find all three. This is the part people get killed by, so it is worth the minutes.

One β€” air with the life used out of it. Rot, rust, and still water eat the oxygen, and heavy carbon dioxide settles into the bottom and pushes what is left out. This is the common one, and a flame usually finds it honestly: the flame burns on the same air you do, so it dims and dies down there while you are still up here watching. Lower the candle on a string before every descent, every morning, and after every break β€” bad air pools quietly overnight in a shaft that was fine yesterday. If the flame dims or goes out, nobody goes down. Not quickly. Not just to look.

But even here the flame has a hole worth knowing, because it is the hole that catches careful people. Where the gas comes from rot or from breathing, each breath of carbon dioxide has replaced a breath of oxygen, so the flame starves at about the point the air turns dangerous and the warning arrives on time. Where the gas instead seeps in out of the ground itself β€” limestone country, old volcanic ground, some clays β€” it pushes whole air aside without eating the oxygen first. The oxygen left can still be near enough to ordinary that the candle burns clean and steady in air that is already poisonous with carbon dioxide. If you are digging in limestone or anywhere a neighbour has met "bad air" in a cellar or cave, do not let a bright flame decide for you. Ventilate hard and long anyway, keep the shifts short, and keep the rope on.

Two β€” air that burns. Wet, airless ground makes marsh gas. Marsh gas is lighter than air, so it does not sit politely in the bottom where you expect it; it drifts, and gathers under lids and in pockets. A flame does not warn you about this one β€” a flame is how you set it off. If your candle flares, brightens, or stretches tall instead of dying, that is fuel, and you have just lowered a lit flame into it. Draw it up gently, do not send it down again, ventilate for a long time, and get advice from anyone who has dug near you before you go further.

Three β€” air that poisons, with the candle still burning bright. Two poisons matter here and the flame is blind to both, because both burn happily and leave your candle steady while they kill the person standing next to it.

So the honest rule, which is not the comfortable one:

A flame that dies is proof you must not go down. A flame that lives is not proof of anything.

Test with it anyway β€” a free warning that catches the commonest killer is worth having every single time. But do not let it make you brave. Air at the bottom of a well is made safe by moving it and by keeping a rope on the person in it, never by being cleverly reassured about it.

Watch out

How it works

Rain does not run off β€” most of it soaks in. Down it goes, through soil and sand and gravel, until it reaches rock or heavy clay it cannot pass, and there it gathers. There is no underground lake and no cavern down there. The water sits in the countless small gaps between the grains, the way water sits in a bucket of pebbles: the stone is solid, and the water is everywhere in between. Fill that bucket halfway and you can see a level. The ground has a level too, and it is called the water table.

A well is nothing more than a hole dug below that level, so water can seep sideways out of the ground and stand in your hole. That is why the bottom rings of your lining are laid loose and dry β€” you are not building a tank. You are making a window into water that was already there. And it explains the dry-season rule completely: the table rises and falls with the year, so a hole dug when the table is high is a hole that is dry in August. Dig at the year's thirstiest, and whatever water you find is water that is always there.

The ground has been filtering that water the whole way down, which is why well water is so much clearer than a stream. But filtered is not clean, and the water moves, downhill, slowly. That is the whole of the siting rule: whatever soaks into the ground uphill of you arrives at your well eventually, with no taste and no smell to warn anyone.

Earth has no strength of its own. Rock holds itself up; soil does not. It stands because of a light, temporary grip between grains β€” a grip that a little damp strengthens and real wet destroys entirely. The wall you dug this morning is not holding. It is hesitating. And soil is heavier than your eye believes: one armful weighs like a sack of grain, and an arriving shaft wall is a cartload of it at once, packing itself around the ribs so they cannot lift to draw breath. That is why shoring the metre you are standing in beats any amount of speed or strength, and why the rope matters even when the air is sweet.

And the air is your fire and your breath, wanting the same thing. A flame and a person need the identical ingredient from air: the part that lets things burn is the part that lets you live. That shared appetite is what makes a candle useful β€” it starves first, visibly, down there, where the cost of learning is nothing.

But that is also exactly the limit of it. A flame reports on that one ingredient and on nothing else. It has no opinion about poison. Marsh gas it burns as fuel. Carbon monoxide it makes itself. The rotten-egg gas it burns without a flicker. So a candle answers one question β€” "is there enough air here to live on" β€” honestly and cheaply, every single time. It cannot answer the other question, which is "is this air safe". Those are two different questions, and the second one has no test you can lower on a string. It has only fresh air, a short shift, a watchful hand above, and a rope.
