Move heavy things with levers, ramps, and rollers
A long pole over a stone, a gentle slope, and logs under the load let one person move what ten could not lift.
Building a home means moving stones, logs, and beams far heavier than you. Trying to muscle them will hurt your back — and your back is the one tool you cannot replace out here. The good news: three simple tricks — the lever, the ramp, and the roller — let one careful person move loads that ten people could not lift straight up. Every great stone building on Earth was raised with these three ideas.
The trick behind all of them is the same: trade distance for effort. Push something a long way with a small force, instead of a short way with a huge force. You do the same total work, but your body can actually deliver it.
You need
- A lever: a strong, straight pole — green (freshly cut) wood, about as thick as your wrist and as long as you are tall or longer. Longer pole, easier lift. It must be sound: no cracks, no rot (rotten wood snaps without warning).
- A fulcrum: a fist-sized to head-sized stone or a short log — the pivot the lever rocks on. It must sit firmly and not roll.
- Rollers: 3 to 5 straight logs — each about as thick as your arm, longer than the load is wide, and roughly the same thickness as each other so the load rides level. Peel the bark off; it slips.
- A ramp: any firm slope — earth banked against a ledge, or two stout planks side by side. Gentle is everything: aim for a rise of 1 in 5 or less (one hand-height up for every five along).
- Small wedge stones or wood blocks — to chock the load (jam under it) so it can never roll back at you.
Steps
- Look at the load and plan the whole path first. Clear sticks and stones from the route. Decide where the load will stop before you make it move — a moving stone does not wait for you to think.
- Break the lift into lifts of one edge. You almost never need to lift the whole thing. Lifting one edge takes roughly half the weight or less.
- Use the lever to lift an edge:
- Place the fulcrum stone close to the load — a hand's width away.
- Slide the pole's tip under the load's edge, resting on the fulcrum.
- Push DOWN on the far end. Pushing down is safe; if you slip, you fall away from the load, not under it.
- The rule: the longer the pole on your side of the fulcrum, the lighter the push. A pole with the fulcrum one-tenth of the way along lifts ten times your push.
- Chock every gain. Each time the edge rises, kick a block or stone into the gap before you relax. Lift, chock, re-set the fulcrum higher, lift again. You can "walk" a huge stone upward a finger-width at a time and never hold its weight for more than a moment.
- Get rollers under it:
- Lever one end up, slide a roller under, lower onto it. Repeat at the other end with a second roller.
- Push the load forward. As it rolls, rollers pop out behind. Carry each freed roller to the front and lay it straight across the path.
- Steer by angling the front roller slightly the way you want to turn.
- Use the ramp for any climb. Never lift a load up a step — roll or slide it up a gentle slope instead. On planks, keep them side by side and supported underneath in the middle so they cannot bounce or split.
- Rest the load, not just yourself. Whenever you pause, the load must be chocked or on flat ground. "It'll stay for a second" is how toes get crushed.
Watch out
- Never put any part of you under a raised load. Hands, feet, head — nothing goes in the gap unless the load is sitting on solid chocks, not on the lever.
- Push levers down; avoid lifting them up. If an upward-pulled lever slips, the load drops and the pole can whip into your face.
- A snapping pole is a spear. Test the lever on a small rock first. If it creaks or bends sharply, get a thicker or fresher pole.
- Rollers shoot out sideways on slopes. Only roll on level or near-level ground. On any slope, keep a person or a chock on the downhill side — never your own foot.
- A too-steep ramp beats you twice: it is hard to push up and deadly if the load runs back. Make it longer, not steeper, and chock behind the load after every push.
- Fulcrum sinking into soft ground wastes all your effort. Put a flat stone or board under it.
How it works
A lever does not create strength; it trades it. Your hands move a long way down so the load moves a short way up — same work, spread thin enough for one body. The ramp is the same trade laid on its side: a longer path for a smaller push. Rollers simply replace scraping (which grips hard) with rolling (which barely grips at all). Master these three and weight stops being a wall — it becomes a schedule.
