Lay paths and small bridges
Firm dry paths and a safe log bridge tie your fields, water, and neighbors together.
Mud steals more from a settlement than storms do β a little every single day. A boggy track twists ankles, soaks feet, swallows sled runners, and turns a ten-minute walk to the spring into a chore everyone dodges. A firm dry path is quietly one of the biggest gifts you can build. And where a stream cuts your world in two, a small bridge stitches it back together.
Both jobs come down to one enemy: water. A path fails where water sits on it. A bridge fails where water reaches it. Build so water always has somewhere better to go, and your work lasts years.
You need
- A digging tool β spade, mattock, or a fire-hardened digging stick β for ditches and levelling.
- An axe or saw β for clearing, for corduroy logs, and for the bridge.
- Stones and gravel β fist-sized stones for a base, smaller gravel for the top. Riverbeds and scree slopes are your quarry.
- Logs β wrist-to-arm thick for boggy sections; one or two thigh-thick (20 cm or more) sound logs for the bridge itself.
- Stakes and cordage β to pin logs and mark your line.
- A helper β a bridge log is a two-person move at least; use your rollers and levers.
Steps
- Choose the line. Follow where feet already go β people and animals find the driest route by instinct. Avoid dips where water ponds. On a hillside, slant gently across the slope; never run a path straight downhill.
- Clear and strip. Cut brush, then strip off the turf (the living grass mat) along a strip 60 cm wide for walkers, 1.2 m if a handcart will use it.
- Crown the path: shape it so the centre sits 2β5 cm higher than the edges. Water runs off a crown instead of pooling.
- Ditch the wet stretches. Dig a side ditch a spade deep along the uphill side, and give it an outlet downhill every so often. A ditch with nowhere to drain is just a long puddle.
- On soft ground, build up: lay fist-sized stones as a base, then cap with gravel or coarse sand, and tamp (pound it firm).
- Over true bog, lay corduroy: logs placed side by side across the path like ribs, pinned at the ends with stakes, then covered with gravel or soil. It floats your path on the mud.
- For the bridge, pick the spot: the narrowest point with firm, high banks β 3β4 m across at most for a single-log bridge. Look for the debris line (twigs and grass caught in bushes) that marks the highest flood; your bridge must sit above it.
- Seat the ends well. Lay a flat stone or short beam β a sill β on each bank, half a metre back from the edge, and rest the log ends on those. Stake or pin the ends so a flood surge can't pluck the bridge sideways.
- Make the walking surface flat: hew (axe-flatten) the top of the log, or use a split log laid flat-face-up. Two logs side by side, cleated together with cross-pieces, wobble far less than one.
- Add a handrail on one side β two posts and a pole β and test the bridge by loading it gradually well past one person's weight before anyone trusts it daily.
Watch out
- Any path that holds a puddle is becoming mud. Don't fight it with more walking β crown it, ditch it, or build it up that same week.
- A straight-downhill path becomes a stream, then a gully. Slant across slopes, and on any sloping stretch add water bars β a half-buried log or stone ridge angled across the path every 10β20 m to throw water off the side.
- A bridge set low gets taken by the first big flood. Build above the highest debris line you can find, and anchor the ends.
- Bark hides rot. A bark-on log can rot soft in 1β3 years. Strip the bark, choose rot-resistant wood (oak, larch, cedar β whatever resists rot where you live), and replace the log when its surface goes spongy.
- Wet or frosty wood is shockingly slippery. Cut shallow cross-grooves into the walking face for grip, and never carry a heavy load across without checking your footing first.
How it works
Soil is strong when dry and jelly when soaked, so every path trick β crown, ditch, stone base, corduroy β is really one trick: keep water out of the ground your feet press on. A bridge log works because wood is strong along its length; it fails at the ends, where rot and floods attack β which is why good sills and height above flood matter more than the log's thickness.
