Build a simple kiln
Build a clay oven with a fire hole and a draft so pots fire harder and fewer of them crack.
A kiln is a house you build for fire. In an open pit, most of the fire's heat blows straight up into the sky, and pots in cold corners stay soft or crack. A kiln traps the heat around the pots, so the whole load gets hot together β and hotter than a pit ever gets. An open pit peaks near 800β900 Β°C; even a simple kiln reaches 1000β1100 Β°C, and at that heat clay becomes something like stone: harder, tighter, ringing when tapped, weeping water far more slowly (only a glaze β a glassy coat melted onto the pot β or much greater heat stops the seep completely).
The kind here is the oldest kind, an updraft kiln: fire below, pots above, smoke out the top. Its whole anatomy fits in one line. At the bottom sits the firebox β the fire's own room. Above it sits the ware chamber β the pots' room ("ware" just means the things you made). Between the two is the throat: the gapped shelf the flames climb through. On top is the flue β the smoke hole β with a flat lid-stone you slide across to choke the flow or free it.
One honest promise before you dig: this build is a gate. The same craft β thick walls, a hungry draft, patience β will later burn limestone into lime, melt sand toward glass, harden true bricks, and, in a taller cousin of this box fed by bellows, smelt iron β cook the metal right out of its rock. You need
- Clay-rich earth, a lot of it β ten or more large basketfuls. It doesn't need to be as clean as pot clay; dig where your pot clay came from.
- Coarse sand and chopped dry straw, mixed in so the walls shrink less and crack less as they dry. Cut the straw about a finger long.
- Water for mixing β being near a water source saves a day of hauling.
- Dense, dry stones or thick broken pot pieces for the throat shelf. Take stone from dry high ground β never from a river, lake, or damp soil (see Watch out).
- One flat slab β stone or a pre-fired clay tile β big enough to cover the top hole. This is your throttle.
- Dry firewood β much more than you think. A full firing eats a big stack: roughly an arm-load every half hour for six to eight hours. Split it wrist-thick; fire feeds on surfaces, so thin wood burns hot while whole logs only smoulder.
- A dry, level spot sheltered from strong wind, on ground that doesn't flood, cleared bare for two big steps all around.
Steps
- Mix the wall material. Tread together about 2 parts earth, 1 part sand, and a generous double handful of chopped straw per basketful, with just enough water to make a stiff dough. This mix is called cob. The test: drop a fist-sized ball from waist height β it should flatten like bread dough, not split (too dry) and not splatter (too wet). Work it wet, never as dry dust (see Watch out).
- Mark the shape. Draw a circle about 60β80 cm across β a bit more than the length of your arm. That is one good batch of pots. Resist building bigger: every extra hand-width of width is another hour of wood.
- Build the firebox mouth first. On the side your wind usually comes from, form a low tunnel about 25 cm wide and tall β one long hand-span each way. Arch its roof rather than flattening it; an arch carries the weight of the walls above without sagging.
- Raise the walls. Build up in rings of cob, each about a hand-width (10 cm) thick. Press every handful firmly into the last β a trapped air pocket becomes a steam bomb later. Scratch each ring rough before adding the next, so the layers knit. Stop when a day's work stands knee-high and let it stiffen overnight until it feels like firm cheese. Lean the walls slowly inward as they rise, closing toward a dome.
- Set the throat. At about shin height (30 cm up), bridge your dry stones or thick shards across the inside, leaving gaps you could pass a fist through. Pots sit on this shelf; flame walks up between the gaps. Stingy gaps choke the fire; a flimsy shelf drops the load into it. Press on it with your full weight before building on.
- Close the dome and leave the flue. Keep leaning the rings inward until the dome closes at waist height, leaving one fist-wide opening (10β15 cm) at the very top. Set the lid-stone beside it, half-on. Heat leaving the top pulls air in the bottom; the lid-stone decides how much.
- Dry it slowly, then bake it. Air-dry three or four days under cover. Then burn a small fire inside for an hour or two each day for two more days, growing it each time, so the deep water leaves gently and the walls don't burst with steam at full heat. Hairline cracks will open β normal, not failure. Smear wet cob into them and carry on.
- Load the first firing. Stack bone-dry pots on the shelf, loose, so flame can walk between and around every pot β leave hallways, don't pack a basket. Nothing touches the walls; big pots low, small pots nested inside or perched above.
- Fire it β the same checkpoints as the pit, just steeper. First, two hours of tiny flame in the mouth: the steam stage. While the kiln's breath at the flue feels damp and fogs a cool blade, keep waiting. Then feed steadily up, one arm-load at a time, never a heap, because clay must pass the quartz shiver gently: around 573 Β°C the quartz grains in every pot suddenly swell, all together, by one small jump β and a pot rushed through that moment swells unevenly, hot side before cool side, and cracks. You will hear the kiln begin to breathe β a low steady roar at the mouth as the draft pulls hard. Watch the color inside climb: dull red, bright red, then orange. Orange is your goal.
- Soak, seal, and wait. Hold the glowing orange for about an hour β potters call this the soak; it lets heat reach every pot's heart. Then stop feeding, block the mouth with clay slabs, slide the lid-stone fully over the flue, and walk away for a full day. The quartz shiver waits on the way down too, so cooling must be as slow as heating. Open only when you can rest a bare hand on the outside wall.
Watch out
- Wet pots explode. Water trapped in clay turns to steam, and steam wants some sixteen hundred times the room β the pot bursts like a little bomb and wrecks its neighbours. The save: a week of drying, the cheek test (cold against your cheek means still damp β the water leaving the clay is stealing warmth), and the two-hour gentle start.
- Wet stones explode the same way. River stones, lake stones, and stones from damp ground hold water inside; over the fire they burst and throw hot shards. The save: only dense stone from dry high ground, or shelf bars you fired yourself from thick clay.
- Air pockets in the walls burst. A hollow left by a lazy handful of cob fills with expanding steam and blows a hole mid-firing. The save: press every handful in firmly and knit every layer.
- Heating too fast cracks everything β pots and kiln both, at the quartz shiver near 573 Β°C. The save is pure patience: one arm-load at a time, never a roaring heap because you are bored.
- Opening early is how good firings are ruined. Hot pots hitting cold air crack with a heartbreak ping β the shiver in reverse. The save: the full sealed day. There is nothing you can do inside anyway.
- Burns wait everywhere. A kiln looks cold long before it is cold, and hot clay looks exactly like cold clay. The lid-stone stays scorching for hours; move it with two green sticks β fresh-cut wood too wet to catch β never fingers. Keep children away from the mouth.
- Never breathe dry clay dust as a habit. Fine clay dust harms lungs slowly and permanently. Work clay wet, mix outside, and wipe spills with water instead of sweeping dust into the air.
- Rain on unfired cob melts it. Cover the drying kiln with bark, hides, or a lean-to until it has been fired once; after that the walls are half pottery themselves and shrug off weather.
- Fire spreads. Bare ground for two big steps all around, water or loose earth standing ready, and never leave a firing kiln alone.
- Cracks in a working kiln are not failure. Every kiln cracks a little as it swells and shrinks; a working kiln wears scars. Smear the same cob into them between firings and fire on.
- Smoke backing out of the mouth means the draft has died β the wind flipped, or the flue is choked too far. The save: open the lid-stone and shield the mouth from gusts with a slab or a bank of earth.
How it works
A kiln is a chimney taught to eat its own heat. Everything it does comes from two tricks: an engine made of air, and walls made of blankets.
The engine first. Hot air spreads out, so a lungful of it is lighter than a lungful of cold air β that is why it rises. Inside your kiln stands a column of very hot air, pouring up out of the flue like smoke up a chimney. But leaving air must be replaced, and the only way in is the mouth at the bottom β so the rising column sucks fresh air through the firebox. That suck is the draft. Fire still needs fuel, heat, and air β the same fire triangle as ever β but this fire pumps its own bellows. The hotter it burns, the lighter the air in the chimney; the lighter the air, the harder the suck; the harder the suck, the more air feeds the fire; the more air, the hotter it burns. The harder it burns, the harder it breathes. The lid-stone is your hand on that loop: slide it across and the chimney chokes, the breathing slows, the fire calms. You steer this fire from the top, not the bottom.
The blankets second. In a pit, heat radiates away to the open sky and is gone. Your cob walls are thick blankets full of trapped air β the straw burns out and leaves thousands of tiny pockets, and still air is one of the worst carriers of heat there is. So heat that used to escape now stays, and each new arm-load adds its heat on top of the heat already kept. Heat stacks. That stacking is the whole distance between a pit's 850 Β°C and a kiln's 1050 Β°C.
And what does the extra heat buy? Clay stops being mud much earlier β near 500β600 Β°C the water locked inside its very grains β not the damp you dried away, but water built into the clay itself β is driven off for good, and from then on the pot can never soften back into mud: the ingredient that made it mud is gone. But it is still weak and chalky. From about 900 Β°C the clay particles begin to fuse where they touch β a change called sintering β tiny welds forming grain to grain, everywhere at once. A pit barely reaches that door; hold a kiln's orange and the welds multiply until the pot rings like stone.
Last trick: the kiln tells you its temperature in color. Anything hot enough glows, and the glow is an honest thermometer β dull red near 600β700 Β°C, bright cherry red near 800β900 Β°C, orange near 1000β1100 Β°C, toward yellow beyond. Judge it in shade or dusk, never full sun β daylight drowns the glow and lies about the color β and you carry a thermometer in your eyes.
