Make a charcoal and sand filter
Layer cloth, sand, and crushed charcoal so cloudy water runs out clear β then boil it anyway.
Sometimes the only water you can find is brown soup β mud, leaf bits, a swampy smell. Boiling kills the germs in it, but it does not remove the dirt, and boiled mud is still mud: gritty, foul-tasting, and hard on your stomach. A filter fixes that. Water trickles down through layers of gravel, sand, and crushed charcoal, and each layer catches something the one above missed.
One rule before anything else: a filter cleans, it does not disinfect. Germs are small enough to slip through the finest sand. Filter first to make the water clear, then boil it to make it safe. Always both, in that order.
You need
- A tall container with a small hole at the bottom β a hollowed log or thick bamboo section, a bark cone rolled and tied, or a bottle with the base cut off, hung upside down. Knee-high is a good size.
- Charcoal β real wood charcoal from your own fire (see "Make charcoal"): black, light, and shiny-broken. Never use ash, part-burnt wood, or shop briquettes, which are glued with chemicals.
- Sand β clean and washed, from a stream bed or dug from below the surface. Rinse it in water until the rinse runs clear.
- Gravel or small pebbles β pea-sized to thumb-sized, also rinsed.
- Tightly woven cloth β two pieces: one inside the filter, one to strain water before it goes in.
- Something to crush with β a rock or club, and a flat stone or hide to crush the charcoal on.
- A clean container underneath β to catch the good water.
Steps
- Crush the charcoal. Break it down to grains between rice-sized and coarse-sand-sized. Too chunky and water rushes past; powder packs solid or washes through. Aim for "coarse black sand."
- Plug the bottom. Fold cloth into a pad and press it over the hole inside the container, then hold it down with a layer of pebbles. This keeps the layers in and lets water out.
- Build the layers, bottom to top. Each main layer about a hand-width (10 centimetres) deep:
- Gravel on the cloth β the coarse base.
- Sand on the gravel.
- Crushed charcoal β the heart of the filter.
- Sand again, to hold the charcoal down.
- Gravel or a flat stone on top, so poured water does not gouge a hole in the layers.
- Rinse the filter itself. Pour water through and watch it come out grey with charcoal dust. Keep pouring β a few full containers' worth β until it runs clear. Throw all that grey water away.
- Pre-strain, then filter. Pour source water through your spare cloth first to catch leaves and grit, then pour it slowly into the top of the filter. Catch what drips from the bottom.
- Slow is good β a trickle means real time against the charcoal. If it gushes through, the grains are too coarse or a layer has channeled; rebuild it.
- Boil everything the filter gives you. No exceptions. Clear is not the same as safe.
- Rest the filter dry between uses. Let it drain fully; a filter left soggy for days grows slime that makes water worse, not better.
Watch out
- The deadly shortcut: drinking straight from the filter. Clear, sweet-tasting water can still be full of germs. This filter's job is clarity and taste β boiling's job is safety.
- Wrong charcoal. Ash is not charcoal β it makes bitter, harsh water. Briquettes carry binders and lighter chemicals. Use only black char from plain wood.
- A tired filter turns traitor. When filtered water starts to smell or taste of the source again, the charcoal is full. Dig out the charcoal, burn it, and repack fresh β every few weeks in regular use, sooner for very dirty water.
- Channels cheat the layers. If water finds one fast path down the side, it skips the cleaning. Pour gently onto the top stone, and repack if you see the layers slumping.
- Chemical-tainted water stays tainted enough to matter. Charcoal grabs some chemicals but you cannot know how much. Water smelling of fuel, or from near mines and sprayed fields, should be left alone, filter or no filter.
How it works
Sand strains: particles bigger than the gaps between grains get stuck, and each layer's gaps are finer than the last. Charcoal does something stranger β it is riddled with microscopic pores, so much that one thumb-sized lump hides an inner surface bigger than a garden. Bad-tasting and bad-smelling substances drift into those pores and stick to the walls, a trick called adsorption. That is why charcoal fixes taste and smell β and why, once its pores are full, it stops working and must be replaced.
